Description
In late 2013, J.C. Hill got a call from his father, John, asking if he’d like to open a brewery restaurant in Monterey. The opportunity to collaborate on a project with his father and move home to Northern California to start a family with his wife, Melanie, could not be ignored and thus he moved. Located in a historically registered building in Old Monterey, this is our original location that opened in 2014. The Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill serves locally sourced, gastropub-influenced fare built around it's beers that are produced on-site.

In April of 2016 our Salinas Production Brewery & taproom opened to supplement house offerings at our downtown Monterey pub, and allow us to supply draft beer to quality minded local establishments.

16 oz. can, pours a clear golden with a medium white head. Aroma reveals gentle tangy citrus hops, some tropical melon, and oily piney hops. Flavour is bright, with lots of oily piney hops, melon, some tangy citrus, and subtle biscuity malt. Piney, melony, and oily finish, with gentle bitterness and a slight dullness to it. Not the most vigorous hop expression, but the structure and balance are very good.

Poured from a 16 oz beer dated March 7, 2024. Aroma is hop forward and fruity with lots of passion fruit, rambutan, lychee, strawberry and lighter notes of tropical citrus and dank resin. Light cracker malt notes with a light alcohol note as well. Pours a hazy, pale, golden color with a medium sized, thick, creamy, white head that recedes quickly to the edges where a thin film lingers. Flavor is somewhat sweet with light cracker malt notes. Medium high to high bitterness and light alcohol notes. Lots of fruity notes of passion fruit, lychee, strawberry and rambutan with lighter dank, resin notes. Hints of tropical citrus. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a solid IPA with really nice, fruity hop notes that lean more towards tropical fruit and strawberries than citrus and stone fruit. Creamy, malt body that hides the alcohol and bitterness well while carrying the soft fruity notes.

Poured from a 16 oz can dated February 15, 2024. Aroma is moderately hop forward with notes of grapefruit, orange, tropical citrus and dank, resin notes with pine character. Light cracker malt notes and hints of alcohol. Pours a rather clear, brilliant golden color with a medium sized, medium thick, white head that recedes steadily to the edges where it lingers in clumps. Pine notes are more accentuated in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a solid San Diego Pale Ale / IPA. Very much a West Coast IPA by styles as a pale ale (whatever that means). Good hop notes in aroma and flavor.
