@Hopduvel, Gent rood/bruin met zeer schuimige volle witte kraag aroma: zeer hoppig en kruidig in de neus, citrus en graan smaken: matig kandij suiker zoet, redelijk bittertje, sterk, matig gemout (geroosterde mouten), kardemom medium body, glad textuur, kardemom is té nadrukkelijk aanwezig in het bier.

Thick & dense, nearly putty off-white to cream head, stable, over totally hazy orange beer. Very catty hops wafting up on pouring. Cattiness and ureum absolutely not volatile, to the detriment of possible other aromas - maybe some citrus? Bitter-hoppy. Fruity esters, with even some near-sweet citrus as orange, but always an oily presence of hops. Long-lasting bitterness, faint astringency, oily to sticky feel. Medium bodied at least. Bit crude IPA. Pity I couldn’t get my hands on either α nor β, ’cause I got a nagging suspicion they wanted the δ to win... My bad character, maybe.

Absurdly towering dense ivory head, irrregular and leaving shards of lace over hazed orange-brown beer. Heavy, perfumed-spicy nose, the cardamom jumping out of the glass with the head. Dishwashing liquid with christmas herbs. Sharp bitterish spicy, very wry to astringent. Again the cardamom, but all its wry flavour dominating its aromatic vectors. Tannine-like. Really unpleasant mouthfeel, as drinking tea from horsechestnut or acorns. Medium body. Cardamom - as coriander - is a marvelous spice. In oriental food. NOT IN BEER.

Bottled @ de Molen, small sample. Slight hazy golden color, medium head. Aroma of soft citrussy hop, slight funky, soft belgian yeast esters. Not too heavy on the yeast though, which is good and they have put belgian IPA on their label. Slight bitter taste. All in all it’s a typical Belgian beer in that the balance is ok, but nothing really outspoken. The crowdfunding stuff is nice, but I think they should focus on what they like themselves the most instead of making what most people like, because that can only result in bland mediocreness.

Bottle at the De Molen Second Tuesday tasting, September 2013. Poured a clear medium amber with a big frothy white head. The aroma is big fruit and alcohol with a slight hint of paint stripper. The flavour is medium bitter with some grapefruit citrus and yeast on the smooth palate. The bitterness lingers for a while in the finish.

33 cl. bottle @ home. Procured from De Hopduvel. BBF 28/10/2014. This one is also made with brett & spelt as well as cardamom and candy sugar. Smell is huge black liquorish, black bread, unpleasant spices, sticky, something unpleasant for me, syrup, something in the smell rubs me the wrong way, light rotting eggs maybe?… Taste is black liquorish, thick rye and black bread, heavy spices, slight dark fruits, once again prunes esp. prune jam, not much in the way of bret. Candy sugar, sticky sweet roots and red wine vines,… Over carbonated. No there is something very dominant taste / smell in here which rubs me the wrong way… maybe the cardamom? I don’t know. My least favourite one of the 4. Ugh too bad, I enjoyed the other 3.

33 cl. bottle @ home. Procured from De Hopduvel. BBF 28/10/2014. The bottle promises loads and loads of hops. Semi-clear orange with a semi-lasting milky head, less carb. than Alpha or Beta. Smell is indeed hops, lovely, orange peel, slight exotic fruits, sweet fruits, slight caramel, hint pine, lovely,… Taste is orange rind, touch candy sugar and toffee, pine (med. to light) mixed with spices and floral flourishes,… Slightly sticky. Not too much carb. this one unlike the first 2. Not the best but quite enjoyable and pleasant. I can see why this one has won so far but I haven’t tried Gamma yet. The competition seems bit of a silly promotion stunt to me now that all 4 have been released, not that I mind trying all 4 of them. P.S.: Tried Gamma, it is the worst one & the whole thing seems rigged, I think that they wanted this one to win.

33 cl. bottle @ home. Procured from De Hopduvel. BBF 28/10/2014. Contains paradise seeds (apparently an aphrodisiac according to the bottle), juniper berries, Perle hops and saison yeast. Surprisingly dark for a saison, overripe dark red fruits, mahogany, slight red, fading quickly (high carb.) off-white head. Smell is slight saion yeast, sticky overripe dark fruits & again prunes, this is getting weird, syrup, something quite BE, touch syrup and sticky malts. Saison yeast in taste, black pepper, overripe dark fruits, sweet slightly milky white bread (BE thing), spices coming up (paradise seeds & juniper berries I suppose), bitter slight herbs, bread and bark. Too high carb. Bit too run-of-the-mill BE even with all the special ingredients. Still nice but not as fancy as Alpha was. Mmm… saison… the yeast is sort of there but the heaviness and the dark fruits etc.

33 cl. bottle @ home. Procured from De Hopduvel. BBF 28/10/2014. Brett, spelt malts, coriander, orange peel and Smaragd hops are listed amongst the statistics and ingredients. Very murky brownish fruity amber, very high carb. ~ insta-gone head. Sticky dark fruits syrup in the nose, prune jam, light dark bread, quite hoppy, fruity hops, light bread. Taste is big prune jam (interesting), other grains (spelt I suppose), dark bread, ripe dark fruits, light musty sweet red grapes, even touch ripe dark berries, definite brett presence, sweetish with brown sugar and syrup but also some hops. Very high carb. & murky body. Messy but I am a big sucker for beers like this. Bit puzzled as to why they did the competition if they released all 4 beers.
