Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

Wow. Just opened a beer I had in the cellar. (Aka basement.) And the difference from that first brew I rated opening day was notable. Much smoother. The ginger has mellowed and the fruit has gotten juicier with peach and apricot really finding it’s place, the Brett edge is less with more a vanilla calmness. Still ginger after but not as edgy. 05-08-2015 Original review: Love it when I get a Bellwoods first. Picked-up minutes ago from the brewery, on this beautiful sunny summer day. Standing in line behind the Block3 guys (try their saison), in town for the OCB conference at GLB. Pours a, more than cloudy, almost murky ice-tea brown, with a white head that disappears fairly quickly. Nose of ginger, green apple funk, and mild cereal malts. Big flavour on this one. Heavy on the ginger, and the sour-apple brett supported by cerial malts, and a general mild fruitiness. The cran and apricot are indistinct in the general mash of flavours. Aftertaste is a lingering brett and ginger. A little intense on the start, but it evens out and is decently drinkable.

Cloudy brown pour, tan head. What you would expect from a unfiltered double. Nice aroma of sweet roasted malts, a little raisin, a touch of booze and bready yeast. Roasted malts, a decent balance in the sweetness and bitter, some dried fruit - plum and raisin, a little touch of yeast. Excellent showing for a dubbel.

Tasting at Matt’s
Cloudy golden color. Pungent citrusy aroma, it has a hint of Nelson Sauvin, not just the expected aroma from Citra. Dry mouthfeel, easy malt flavor (we are in Session IPA field), strong bitterness, with some hop resins and some citrus peel.
Nice, but not impressive.
