(Bottle 33 cl) The smaller sibling to the two great Rochefort-brothers is still quite a mature boy. Dark amber, hazy with a small tan head. Very fruity nose - fresh fruit rather. Lots of yeasty flavours here, dry with notes of cocoa and perhaps licorice. Spicy and solid alright but an easier beer to drink than the the two big Roches. Fine introduction to the style. 240599

11 oz bottle-pours a thick, deep tan head. Color is dark brown, non-transparent. Aroma is licorice. Taste is licorice/coffee flavors with a dry alchohol finish. Good beer, not my style. I enjoyed his little brother, #6 much more.

11 oz bottle pours a tall tan head with a red-brown color that I can’t see through. Aroma is fruity and licorice. Taste is dry, fruity, alcohol, grain, licorice-fairly complex. It has a nice finish. A good beer, not as much as I expected though.

330 ml bottle, at the 32nd Cambridge Beer Festival. Served directly from the fridge. Had to wait half an hour before I could drink it. Strange thing with British pubs and beer festivals - they’re very conscious that their native cask ales should be served at cellar temperatures, but foreign bottled beers are served ice cold, no matter what! Barnyard aroma with notes of dried fruits and oak, improves as the beer warms up. Flavour has much of the same elements as Rochefort 8 and 10, just on a more moderate scale. Dried fruits, brown sugar, tobacco, oak.

11oz bottle-Pours a tan/coffee color thick head, reduces to an airy foam. Color is a very cloudy dark amber, talk about nonfiltered/natural-there’s decent size particles settling down through the beer. Taste is a nice sweet sensation with a bit of bite. This beer has a creamy feel to it. A nice beer, others at a more moderate price are as enjoyable.

Bottle (bought in Prague, Pivni Galerie (!)): Dark brown, cloudy, thin but long lasting firm froth; huge fruity (plums) and vinous (port) nose with a tinge of hoppiness from far behind; sweet vinous beginning, very complex flavour ending with a quite dry, slight but distinctive bitter (notes of chocolate) aftertaste; warming - no surprise, 11.3 % can’t be hidden easily......Belongs to the three or four super-tappist brews!

(Bottle 33 cl) Oh dear, now we’re REALLY getting closer to God in heaven. Very dark brown, hazy with loads of sediment. It’s got all the good stuff going on the flavour palette: dried fruits, syrup, roasted malt - you name it. But a devil of a beer because the alcohol is so well hidden, although the alcohol is clearly there. The perfect nightcap - makes you sleep like.... Michael Jackson? 070893

(Bottle 33 cl) Very dark brown but far from black. Nice, creamy head. Chocolatey with loads of malt and dried fruits in the delicious and very complex aroma. Huge sediment. A yummy, yummy Trappist. 050893

Bottle. Burnt sugar, roasted malt, raisin and tannins aroma. Dark brown color with moderate head - pours like a soda. Sweet plum flavor followed quickly by a strong tannic and alcohol finish.

(bottle) Dark murky brown colour with a medium foamy tanned head. Complex aroma of malty caramel, yeast and a vinous nose. Heavy malty taste with notes of dried fruits, prunes and plums and a lasting bitter finish with an alcoholic presence that cannot be hidden at 11.3 ABV anymore.
