Description
Hawkstone is the brainchild of Jeremy Clarkson and Rick and Emma from the Cotswold Brew Co. Having put blood, sweat and tears into cultivating his malting barley, Jeremy was determined that it be put to good use, so resolved to supply it directly to a local brewery to turn into lager. He was introduced to Rick and Emma from the Cotswold Brewery by the landlord at their local and they hit it off immediately. Like Jeremy, they’re committed to supporting local agriculture but they’re not just good people, they’re also excellent brewers. They created Hawkstone Lager - a brew of such exquisite quality that Jeremy decided to invest.

Keg, half-pint in Cromwells Taphouse, Shrewsbury on 24th May 2024. It was their Cider and Sausage Fest, but I had this as a palate cleanser before trying the ciders. Clean golden body, white crown. Decent enough blend with a slight citrus leaning and some sweetness creeping in from the malt content.

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines. Birthday gift from the missus. Clear pale gold. Decent white head. Some lemony notes on top of semi sweet grain. Easy drinking with some sweetness. Clean and nicely burp inducing. Light bitter finish.

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines. Birthday gift from the missus. Clear straw colour. Fairly decent white foam. Clean grain and lightly spicy leafy hop. Easy going and bright on the palate. Maybe errs a little sweet overall. Touch of bitterness on the finish. Steady away. I’d happily do multiples.

10th April 2024
Clear and slightly pale gold beer, small bubbly pale cream colour head. Airy palate, mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Light pale malts, a light creamy sweetness, whisper of grain. A clear lager tang in the mid. Hops are soft pine and a nice light lemony citrus. Airy finish. Yeah, works well as a session lager, I would be quite happy to in the pub all night quaffing pints of this without worrying if I'm gonna fall asleep on the train home. Again.

10th April 2024
Very near clear gold beer, small bubbly pale cream colour head. Light smooth palate, very mildly dry, decent fine minerally carbonation. The malts are smooth and airy and have a distinct caramel streak. This would normally piss me off in an IPA but it works a treat here. The hops are nicely juicy, soft pine into a juicy rounded orange and mandarin citrus. Airy piney finish. Yeah, this is a decent beer, very drinkable. Never an IPA but whatever. Could defo session this.

330ml can from Sandy Balls Holiday Village farm shop. Pours a clear reddish amber, no head at all, no lacing. Aroma of biscuity amber malt. Flavour profile presents gentle toasted malt, toffee, unfermented wort, quite simplistic but fine overall.

Promotional sample at Bicester Avenue Garden Centre. A clear dark gold cider with a light fizz. Tastes of moderately sweet apple juice, not much else. Inoffensive but with little depth, clearly designed to appeal to the masses. Quite pleasant nevertheless, maybe a little syrup-y, but pretty drinkable. When the lady serving said it was created for Jeremy Clarkson's farm shop, I was quite glad I'd just had a free sample and not actually paid any cash for it!

Fles gedeeld met Roelzie en Keukeman. Het is een helder goudgeel cider met een volle witte schuimkraag. Het heeft een aroma van frisse appel. De smaak is vol, appel, zacht zoet en fris zuur. Drinkt lekker weg.
