Description
Hawkstone is the brainchild of Jeremy Clarkson and Rick and Emma from the Cotswold Brew Co. Having put blood, sweat and tears into cultivating his malting barley, Jeremy was determined that it be put to good use, so resolved to supply it directly to a local brewery to turn into lager. He was introduced to Rick and Emma from the Cotswold Brewery by the landlord at their local and they hit it off immediately. Like Jeremy, they’re committed to supporting local agriculture but they’re not just good people, they’re also excellent brewers. They created Hawkstone Lager - a brew of such exquisite quality that Jeremy decided to invest.

Taste comprises bitter sweet apple, light orchard wood, straw, sugars. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Okay easy drinking affair ... not going to set anyones cider world alight!

On tap at Crewe Dog. Pours a golden yellow with a small almost white head and good lacing. There’s continental hops and sweet malts in the aroma, plus lemon and herbal traces. In the mouth it is mainly sweet, but with some underlying bitterness, and medium carbonation. Flavour has grains, lemongrass and continental hops plus hints of ginger and citrus leading to a slightly juicy finish. This a decent refreshing lager.

Keg, half-pint in Cromwells Taphouse, Shrewsbury on 24th May 2024. It was their Cider and Sausage Fest, but I had this as a palate cleanser before trying the ciders. Clean golden body, white crown. Decent enough blend with a slight citrus leaning and some sweetness creeping in from the malt content.

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines. Birthday gift from the missus. Clear straw colour. Fairly decent white foam. Clean grain and lightly spicy leafy hop. Easy going and bright on the palate. Maybe errs a little sweet overall. Touch of bitterness on the finish. Steady away. I’d happily do multiples.
