Draught in Osaka. Decent aroma with some citrusy saaz hops and bready malts. Bitterness in the mouth is better than the Premium Malts, though the hop aroma and flavors can’t match it. Decent malt richness and good balance. A pretty darn good industrial lager, at least when on tap.

Can. A big, bad 7 percent third category dark beer! Aroma of caramel, sugar, something resembling Munich malt, some cherry. Not terrible. Slight cinnamon spice as well. Deep amber, lots of orange, nice fine head. Decentness stops with the first sip. Some caramel and burnt malt flavor, plus shochu. Finish is hot spirits. Wow. Starts ok but completely turns to ass. Light, thin body. Bad, but not terrible, Especially when you think it is 7 per.

This is the first "Third Category" Japanese beer I have ever bought. I wanted to see what they would do with a Vienna-style beer. It is made by mixing a "hopposhu" made with roasted malt and aroma hops with some extra "spirits," I suppose to make up for the alcohol lacking since they use mostly unmalted barley for flavor instead of higher-taxed malt. Can. Pretty, though light, amber color; nice, tight, off-white head. Slightly roasted malt and caramel aroma with a bit of nasal alcohol burn. Sweet caramel flavor with a bit of fruit, like cherries. Actually approaching a Vienna! Body basically non-existant, though, plus there is a bit of weird grain flavor and some metal. Alcohol evident, and rather like shochu. Leaves a strange taste afterwards. Much less terrible than I expected, and I actually finished it. Not good, but drinkable.

Can. A golden beer with a thin white head. The aroma has notes of metal, brewing cereal, straw, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of brewing cereal, malt, hay, and metal, leading to a dry metallic finish. Thanks Theis for sharing.

Can 35 cl. Courtesy of Theis. Clear golden with a small white head. Aroma of brewing cereal - the brown rice really show! Medium body, very sweet brewing cereal. Absolutely no bitterness. 250610

dark brown with a tan head. Lightly roasted malts, some caramel, and cocoa in the aroma. Medium bodied. Flavor has some roasted malts, some molasses, light fruits, and a touch of cocoa. A really nice beer. Easy to drink but with plenty of character (for a macro). I’ve had copious amounts of this one.

Can. Medium gold with a lowish head. Rather uninteresting nose, some fruity hops, a little bit of warm malt. Clean. Crisp, clean palate and flavor. Very fruity, lemony, flavor, with light malts and a good crisp finish. Lingering bitterness is rather mild but pleasant and well-balanced. A very light, crisp summer beer that leaves a good impression. Very little residual sweetness also helps. Better hop (cascade) aroma this time around. Pretty impressive for a macro.
