Had this on tap at the Kyoto brewery, which means this review will be much better that you are likely to find this beer anywhere else. It had a thick, fine, creamy head that you could almost walk on. Aroma was dominated by rich lemony hops. Malt flavor is as good as you get for a Japanese macro, and aroma hops are there in force. Palate works well. Everything was decent, although I was still wishing for a bit more bitterness. The hops are used almost only for aroma. Far better than in the can. Free too! Actually, I would say that this is a premium lager, as it is carefully lagered for a good deal of time.

Can. Rather pale golden color. Tall, frothy head. Refreshing citrus hop aroma. Lemony. Not much malt character in the nose. Citrus hops dominate the flavor. Slightly sweet golden malt stays in the background. Mildly bitter, yet good hop aromas. Wish there was more bittering hops in the boil. Rather light malt is overwhelmed by fruity hops. There is a slightly bitter finish. Not bad for a major—it is nice to taste hops, and the light citrusy flavor makes it very east to drink.

Canned (Rich Malt). Clear golden, average sized head. Through the gaping holes in the thin elegant vanilla curtain foul boiled vegetables and composy odor seeps in. Mid sweet with fruit and stal butter increasing in strength. Clean, streamlined mouthfeel where stale butter heads the parade.

Can. Slightly sweet, malty, aroma, with some wheat malt and a touch of banana. Rather light. A touch of hops. Very pale gold color with frothy head. Light flavor and body, ok hops, not enough of a wheat taste. Slight banana flavor. Not very interesting. If you make a beer with wheat in it, you should make it stand out a bit more!

Seems to me closer to an Amber lager than a dunkel—they would not specify the style. Medium amber-red color with a tall off-white head. Aroma of caramel, roasted malt, nuts. Malty, nutty flavor, good caramel, strong bittering hops. Very well-balanced for the style. No hop aroma used, just bitter. Light body, malt too is lightish, so it is clean and refreshing, not at all sweet. Surprisingly good. Nice roasted flavor with cutting hops and light all around. Probably the best I’ve had from them.

Draught at the Hankyu Beer Garden in Osaka. Rich black color, nose of chocolate, caramel, roasted malts. Relatively nice flavor of chocolate, dark malts. Flavorful and well-balanced. Not anything fantastic, but very good for a Japanese major brewer. Far better than in the can.

Thanks for hauling this can back from Nippon Jörg! Light metalic hop nose - a hint of aromatics.Pale golden, light carbonation, off-white foam. Feels a little bit like a soda-pop: Citric notes, sugar coated popcorn, bit hoppyness, slightly chemical finish, sulphury retronasal. Light body - easy quaffable, probably produces quite interresting headaches.

A golden lager with a huge unctuous frothy white head. Aroma of malt is lightly herbal hops. In mouth, plenty of biscuitty malts with German hopping, very grainy and chewy. Overall, quite interesting. Medium bodied. Can from Japan, from a colleague, Nov. 2007.

Second of tonight’s macro purchase. Clear yellow with a puffy head. Aroma is metallic, grain, rubber, and some sweetness. Non-offensive flavor. Bread and a bit sweet. Thin, smooth body. It’s a macro, but it’s not horrible it’s just not good.

Can. Pours clear golden (suprise, suprise) with a frothy white head. Aroma is malty and a bit of hop citrus. Flavor is more hops bitterness than normal pale lagers I’ve had. Malts as well. Finishes with a little dry bitterness from the hops, and a metallic tinge. Better than most beers I’ve had in this style.
