Description
Leroy Het Sas : The original brewery "Het Sas", later Brouwerij Leroy, established in Boezinge in 1572; destroyed in the First World War and rebuilt in 1924. Named after a lock ('sas' in Dutch) in the nearby canal. Cooperating with Van Eecke (Leroy Breweries Watou) since 1962. Both breweries merged into Leroy Breweries in 2016.
Leroy Watou : Established as a castle brewery for the count of Watou in 1624 and also known formerly as Brouwerij De Gouden Leeuw. Has long been connected to Leroy in Boezinge through family ties, with both breweries cooperating since 1962. They merged into Leroy Breweries in 2016; the Watou branch now does all the actual brewing (while Boezinge handles conditioning and bottling).
From the website:

Bottle. Amber, a fluffy 2cm white head. Dough and spicy aroma with an odd hint of coconut. Pretty sweet and a bit heavy with dough, grain, coriander, stewed fruit, nagging bitterness. Covers the alcohol OK. OK.

Can from Beer52. It pours hazy pale muted lemon yellow with a medium fluffy white head. The aroma is fragrant, floral, damp grass, herbal, spicy, clove, twist of citrus and salty cracker. The taste is crisp, dry, snappy, green banana, twist of orangey citrus, minerality, chalky, floral, damp grain and herbal accents with a dry finish. Average body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Straightforward but quenching.

Straw-coloured, hazy, with a generous white head. Notes of wheat, coriander, citrus, and spices are evident on the nose. The body is rounded and smooth, with a moderate carbonation. The flavour is medium-intense, with notes of honey, bread crust, wheat, dried fruit, citrus, orange, a light spice, and coriander. The bitterness is weak, slightly herbal, with a spicy warming. Easy to drink and refreshing.

Huge cream-tan head over almost bright orange-brown beer; rings of lace. Liquorice, sweet brown bread, autumn leaves, cardboard and faint gingerbread aromas. Dry-ish, with again sweet brown bread and autumn leaves. Chocolate- and other sweat if coloured malts. Finish, dry, sports a little vegetable bitterness. Chewy, at least medium bodied, good carbonation. Not bad. Convincing enough for a dark Bock. New one from Leroy, too bad they closed the real Watou brewery. Txs to Stef!

Pours dark gold to light orange. Some haziness, but i'm still able to see through it. Average to big sized white head, looks quite dense/compact and shows good enough retention, less lacing than expected perhaps. A pretty vivid aroma: the slightest fragrant malts contribution, a base that suggests some kind of fruity (peach?), slightly honeyish sweetness, fresh grassy and citric (cedar perhaps most noticeable) notes, a touch of spiciness. Feels pleasantly fresh, perhaps not super defined. Taste notes follow the aroma pretty closely, perhaps with a slightly less bright/fresh overall feeling (but still pretty nice in that department). Medium to high sweetness, average bitterness; indeed more hoppy than average for a belgian strong ale, but don't think of de ranke's xx bitter, this one is still pretty classic in it's sweetish base. In terms of overall balance: slightest (kind of fruitish) sweet edge in the mouth, balanced, decently dry and nicely cleansing finish. Medium body, quite vividly carbonated (maybe slightly less than similar beers) with delicate/soft bubbles; feels very drinkable for the abv and pleasantly lively. Final impression: a very, very nice classic that packs a very pleasant refreshing character and quite nice depth.
