Orange brown color. Hoparoma with touches of citrus and blackcurrant. Hoppy, just a bit earthy flavor with laurel and blackcurrant. Hopbitter blackcurrant aftertaste with a touch of plastic. Thinnish.

Bottle (best before 2008!) @Bir&Fud Bottega (Rome). Bruna leggermente rossastra, schiuma avorio media. Al naso note di toffee, nocciola, caramello, biscotti di marzapane. In bocca è dolce, ma non stucchevole, con finale piacevolmente amarognolo. Corpo medio-alto, carbonazione leggera. Nonostante l'età, ha retto alla grande!

From old tasting notes. Translucent reddish brown color with a tannish brown head of immense proportions. Bittersweet toasted malt aroma has a caramel character. Intensely sweet toasted malt flavor upfront is slightly cloying. Bittersweet middle is heavy and complex. Finish is bitter and highly hopped leading to a long bitter aftertaste. Big, full bodied and potent. A mouthful in every sip. Outstanding!

Rated from old notes for posterity. Very pleasant. Has an underying burnt bitterness with fruity overtones. Creamy. Warming, but not so alcoholic as the style might dictate.

Dark burgundy coloured, creamy winter warmer with sweet caramelly malt profile, candied fruits and warming, liqueurish alcohol in the finish without any astringency. Great, though more and old ale than a true barley wine to me. Too bad this isn’t made anymore.

Old school English bitter made with hops from the famed Kew Gardens; the profits are invested in the protection of endangered plant species, so this beer immediately gained my sympathy. Amber coloured bitter with soft caramelly and nutty malt sweetishness, dried fruits and spicy hops in the finish, well balanced.

Bottle shared at chriso’s May 2014 tasting - London. Big thanks to Mrs. Lowrey for this one; how prescient of her to see the aged beer craze coming. Pours clear gold with a white cream head. Nice pale bread in the nose, definite notes of oxidation, toffee. Medium to big sweet flavor with syrupy honey, white bread, biscuits, marmalade. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes sweet with rich toffee and oxidation, white bread. Nice old stuff.

Chriso May 2014 tasting. Stale aroma. Stale flavour. It’s not great. Frankly it’s revolting. Drain pour.

Bottled (BBE 2003, from old bottle collection). Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is mild fruits, zest, some slight cardboard (surprisingly little cardboard actually), Flavour is zest, mild grassy, mild citrus and some herbal and grassy notes. Mild cardboard too. Has aged surprisingly well considering the age and the clear bottle.
