Description
The Atlantic Brewing Company began as Acadia Brewing in 1990. At first the brewery was located inside the Lompoc Cafe in downtown Bar Harbor and had a maximum capacity of just one barrel at a time. Within a few years the demand for our beers had grown so much that we moved the brewery two doors down from the restaurant and increased our capacity to seven-barrel batches. However, by 1998, we had outgrown that facility as well and so we moved again – this time to our current location on the Knox Road. Our estate brewery was built on the grounds of a 19th century Maine farmstead, that employs native vegetation and local stonework.
Atlantic Brewing Company has created a site to develop new and exciting small batch beers only seven barrels at a time. This pilot facility allows fellow brewers from around the state, country, and world to collaborate on unique recipes and formulations in a shared environment. These brews, together with Atlantic small batch beer, are offered in a tasting room setting. Flights, large pours, and growlers are available for purchase at the bar.

Thanks to my lady for bringing this back from her trip to Maine - dark brown pour, fizzy pour, looking a lot like cola - rich, roasty aroma, with notes of caramel, vanilla, a faint background smokiness - fairly creamy mouthfeel, dispite the fizzy carbonation - a tiny bit of coffee bitterness up front, coupled with a touch of anise and light blueberry - not as dry as I thought it would be, with a bit of sweet cream character - some light mineral qualities, but not as much as one expects from the style - a little thin-bodied, and lacking a certain amount of complexity, but quite a nice stout none-the-less.

12 oz twist off bottle from The Beer Store Bottle Shop in Moon Township for $1.75 nice price Frank. Has some sediment in the bottom of the bottle. A darker almost apricot orange color unfiltered wheat beer look with swirling haze. Difficult and somewhat aggressive spice or hoppy flavor. I’m curious if this is a fruit or veggy beer. Not many entries in my spiced/herb/vegatable style. Flavor is different than most others, individual in taste. The ginger adds a unique alky impression that makes this seem more than is listed. Has a long way to go when compared tothe manners of circus boy. Not as bad as old fezziwig or Sly Fox Xmas Ale.

Va BF 07 Draft: Blueberry aroma. Copper color, no head. Prominent blueberry flavor ringed with grain. Wheat finish. One dimensional, moderately enjoyable. *Previously credited to (or blamed on) Bar Harbor True Blue Blueberry Ale. H/T to maniac for the correction

Bottle: Poured a light brown color ale with a huge thick foamy head with good retention. Aroma of light blueberry is drier then expected with some funky malt also noticeable. Taste is a weird mix between light blueberry and dry malt with a funky finish that doesn’t integrate very well. Light body with some medium carbonation. I had a couple of blueberry beers in the past few months and they all end up being a drain pour. I am starting to think that this fruit doesn’t integrate well with beer and brewer should think about using some other kind of fruit.

Undated bomber, though I’m quite sure it’s a no older than a 2005. Consumed on 3/10/07
Light goldenrod-copper colored braggot. Well-carbonated and with a large off-white head that provides lots of sticky lacing, no doubt with help from the honey and is retained moderately well. Clarity is high.
Honey fermenation bi-products give off moderate acid, light perfuminess and almost a waxy-vanillin-like note. But it’s well-integrated in to the barley, with caramel malts combining to produce a strong toffeeish nose. The perfuminess is a great contrast to the more sluggish toffee and really adds the dryness that this style so often lacks. Other notes of wildflowers, hibiscus, rose petals, chamomille...that sort of thing. Not that there’s any in there, but the esters/phenols really give off these notes in moderate quantities. Alcohol is deceptively well-concealed, I thought. Definitely some warmth to it, but no fusels that I smelled. Strong aroma, as well.
Vanilla and caramel are quickly braced by chewy honey in the flavor, adding more of the toffee-like notes seen from the nose. Brushstrokes of acidity sweep through the palate, charging the palate with a strong, dry/tingly sensation culminating in to a moderately phenolic, very zesty finish, dotted with light malt breadiness. Carbonation is medium, helping to break up the sweetness somewhat and prevent the beer from being syrupy. I’d definitely call it sticky at points, but that’s appropriate for the style. I really was surprised by the attenuation of this one, overall. I was expecting a cloying residual sugar bomb and it’s nothing of the sort. Light hints of apples and more spicy phenolics on the finish with dry breadiness and light alcohol warmth. Not very rich, but I don’t like rich meads/braggets.
