Served via cask dispense at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green(Feb ’12). Dispensed into a UK half pint jug to a clear amber/gold colour with a thin white head which soon subsided to a small pond on top - around the edge of the glass. On the nose, caramel a little yeast and some fruit aroma, but not particularly strong in any area. Taste wise more going for this beer than the smell! Sweet malt, caramel, bready, a little yeast and a bitter hoppy dry aftertaste. Mouthfeel was decent enough, low carbonation, medium to full in body. Overall - an OK beer but not something I’ll be looking to actively seek out again!

Chelmsford Beer Festival. Light haze on this pale gold beer, suddy white head. Light dry palate with a tiny bit of crispness. A little citrus and gooseberry and subtle lemon. Tiny bit of creamy malt. Nice tangy finish. Tangy finish with gooseberry and lemon citrus. Nice lager - like this!

Fine roasted aroma, similar taste but with chocolate notes with a medium and refreshing body.

12th Feb 2012: Sunday lunchtime session at The White Hart, Shifnal, Shropshire. Hand pulled pint. Light amber body with an off-white which started thin and got even thinner as the beer level sank down the glass. Mixed bag of aromas: all weak, hints of malty sweetness and fruit as well as hop citrus notes. The taste was also a mixture, thankfully stronger than the smells: Dried fruits, biscuit malts and a mini hop bitterness towards the end of each gulp. Not a world beater, but well worth trying if you ever see it

From BA: Feb 2008 with an update at the back from Feb 2012: Brown 500ml bottle, unable to read the best before date, hope it was OK. Poured into a Corsendonk tulip glass twice, because I can. Lovely dark brown colour, mahogany wood brown, no head, just a collar almost straight away. I like to have a head on my beers though. The aroma is all about the malts used in the brew, rich toasted almost burnt smell, warming is another way of putting it. The taste doesn’t live up to the richness of the aromas, still flavoursome and very malty none the less, hops also appear within taste, a sweetness comes into the beer as it warms too. Maltiness apart, there is very little to this beer and you would never guess it had 4.5% within. Was expecting more from this, not as good as I’d hoped, average at best. Update 17th Feb 2012: Had a pint (Cask) last night and really enjoyed it. Those malt flavours I mentioned in the original review were still in major control but the overall tasting was a lot more balanced and if I’d been scoring the beer on last nights findings it would have been higher in every box apart from the smell score which would have stayed at 4.

From BA in December 2007: This bottle was given to me by a work colleague, thanks Ian. Poured into a Hannen Alt glass three times, it was a deep ruby red colour with a fast fading brown head. The aroma was all about farmyards, farmyards where sheep have just moved through and left a few piles of droppings behind them. Some would call it a healthy country smell others would not be so kind. The bottle says ’May contain gluten’, well does it or doesn’t it? I didn’t find anything to like about the taste. There were some burnt malts, maybe some burnt caramel but mostly a peat come earthy smack to it which I just couldn’t take too. The 6% wasn’t really evident to me, but the flavours I mentioned above did linger, so the mouthfeel was OK even if i didn’t enjoy it. Big disappointment and letdown, this was not what I expected at all. Winter beer of Britain 1999 ’My Arse’.

Brown 500ml bottle consummed during one of my ’random beer tasting evenings’ just on its best before date in Oct 2010.. The beer had an almost dull look to it, dirty gold/amber in colour, neat white foaming head on top. The aroma was a mild citrusy hop smell, nothing much though. The flavours were a pleasant blend of hops and malts. Slightly more hops, although the malts were more noticeable in the first instance. Mid bodyfeel, nothing heavy but certainly not watery in any way. An OK beer and just above average in most aspects.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before 3 Nov 2010, drank and reviewed 19 Oct 2010. Poured into an ’Abbot Ale’ tankard. The bottle label tells a pleasant tale about ’Dent Railway Station’ and the walk to the brewery from the said station, buy a bottle to read it! Wonderful looking dark body, even held up to the light it still retained it’s depth and darkness. On top sat a deep tan coloured foaming blanket which produced huge rich lacing as I downed the beer. The smells were malty and leaning towards liquorice more than any sweeter trends. The taste was all malt with very little hop content being found. Like the aroma, the maltiness favoured the less sweet side, with again liquorice being the lead player in my estimation. The body was full and fairly rich, espeicialy when you remember the alcohol content is only 3.8% ABV. Easy to drink and very ’moreish’, wish I’d bought more when I got this bottle.

Cask at Market Porter, 4th April 2012. Good and distinctive easy drinking session ale, would have again.
