Description
Hardywood officially began its mission to brew with purpose in late 2011 as one of only two craft breweries in the city of Richmond. Our original brewhouse and taproom was a vacant warehouse discovered in a long-forgotten neighborhood known nearly a century prior as Richmond’s German Brewing District. Hardywood has been drawing new life to this forgotten area one draft pour at a time. We now operate a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom in the original location, as well as a 60-barrel brewhouse and destination brewery in the West Creek area of Richmond, right on the border of Goochland County.

Today, Hardywood continues to develop and deliver on its mission with a sharp focus on brewing quality, sourcing local, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and giving back.

Bottled. Hazy golden colour with a minor white head. Aroma and flavour are spicy, some crisp and sweet malts along with some zesty and mild citrusy notes. Also a bit grainy and cardboardy notes to it.

Dark brown body, with a tiny head. Aroma of cinnamon, coffee, dark chocolate, liquorice, dark bread, bourbon. Tastes similar. Medium creamy mouthfeel. Finishes medium roasty, spicy, moderate sweet, with cinnamon, dark bread, some coffee. The spices are quite prominent, but this still has a lot of depth, with a great balance between sweet and roasty. Very well integrated bourbon, not too heavy. Lovely stuff. Score: 8 / 4 / 8 / 4 / 17

On tap at Devil Craft Hamamatsucho, pours black with a small tan head. Nose is full of gently tart raspberries, roasted malt and a touch of cocoa. Flavour is full of juicy raspberry, light roast, and a touch of cocoa. Much lighter than the bourbon version I recently had. Good.

On tap at Devil Craft Kanda, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is extremely rich, with big bourbon barrels, some vanilla, and plenty of raspberry. Flavour is robust yet not too brutal, with intense raspberry upfront that melds with the roasted malt, light vanilla, and barely any bourbon. Juicy raspberry marries the roasted malt to perfection. Excellent.
