Description
Hardywood officially began its mission to brew with purpose in late 2011 as one of only two craft breweries in the city of Richmond. Our original brewhouse and taproom was a vacant warehouse discovered in a long-forgotten neighborhood known nearly a century prior as Richmond’s German Brewing District. Hardywood has been drawing new life to this forgotten area one draft pour at a time. We now operate a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom in the original location, as well as a 60-barrel brewhouse and destination brewery in the West Creek area of Richmond, right on the border of Goochland County.
Today, Hardywood continues to develop and deliver on its mission with a sharp focus on brewing quality, sourcing local, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and giving back.

Super deep dark brown coloured body with an oily glow on top and a relatively fast-dying tan head that starts off at around two centimetres in height and leaves a thin layer after a few minutes. Aroma of big rich malt notes with a lot of roasted malts, oatmeal, vanilla, grain and a lot of creamy lactose notes noticeable, but the raspberries are seemingly pretty soft now, with some pitted fruits, raisins, figs and especially molasses scents coming from here with of course a lot of emphasis on the sweetness, but the alcohol is noticeable too, with the roasted malts the strongest. Medium to Full-bodied; Very nice balanced flavour of roasted malts, but the raspberry really shines through and even leaves a tart flavour at the beginning, with more of a vanilla, creamy and especially sweeter finish, but the immediate taste of raspberries and malt is very nice. Aftertaste shows some rich malty notes, but the sugars and especially the raspberry notes take over and leave a complex, robust finish that is balanced and flavourful without being overpowering, but that could be due to the age. Overall, a very nicely structured and especially well-balanced beer that is sweet, rich, roasty, tart and flavourful without being cloying, too strong or too deep - great throughout, and while I aged mine a good deal, this may be nice enough right away? I sampled this corked and caged, 75 cL bottle, purchased from Costco in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 28-February-2019 for US$10,99 sampled a bit more than three years later at my house here in Washington a few blocks away on 08-July-2022.

12oz bottle from the brewery. Spicy, herbal, a little odd aroma. Filtration keeps the body really clean, but also take away some of that yeasty, bready, creaminess. Drinkable enough, OK.

12oz bottle from the brewery. Just what I was hoping it would be: a nice, crisp, clean , well brewed American IPA. Easy drinking and refreshing for the ABV. Floral, citrus, mild bitterness. Mellow toffee touched malt tone. Great balance. Solid.

12oz bottle. Medium bodied, bready, a touch of mineral. Pretty tasty, refreshing Pils. Not quite the hop character you might expect, but still has a pleasant balance, bready lager notes. Very sessionable. Good.

12oz stubby pours a murky black with no head. Nose of windex and cinnamon and ginger and cardamom. Flavor has malt, ginger, pineapple, coconut. Full bodied, toasty finish. Cinnamon is heavy. Drain pour. Too much.

Poured a hazy yellow-orange color with a small white head. Aroma was big Belgian notes, peachy, with cobbler notes and creamy vanilla. Flavor was similar, really dug this one at the time.
