Opaque med-brown; light brown head; aroma of alcohol, chocolate, raisin, baked apples. Creamy texture, milk chocolate balances with some alcohol heat. Yeast, vague fruit notes. A simple beer whose popularity continues to confound me. To each his own I guess.
2 years old: Opaque cherrywood. Inch thick mocha head - impressive given the age and strength of this brew. Vague dark fruits, earth, caramel, malts and alcohol (esp. as it warms). Drinks like a warm Frosty spiked with brandy - sweet, thick, oily, sugary, vaguely fruity (gooseberry, plum, pear), artificial chocolate. Finishes too timid unless it is warm in which case alcohol attacks.

Like its dark cousin Gulden Draak, this is a rather substantial ale, with a lot of malt, but lacking the complexity needed to make it great.
2 Years Old:
Orangey-amber liquid is so choked with thick yeast clumps that is it rendered opaque. The head is a thin white whisp. The aroma is strong - pineapple, passion fruit, guava and brandyish alcohol. On the palate, the alcohol is very upfront, hitting hard like Golden Glow w/o the nasty off-flavours. Beyond that are layers of peach, honey, nuts (the latter two giving it a baklava note); sweetness of still unfermented malt plays off the alcohol and esters in a triplex harmony that is bludgeoning and yet shows some gentle, nuanced character. Ap2, Ar7, F8, P4, O15 = 3.6

Meer zeer oude aantekeningen, deze gedronken toen ie zo'n 2 jaar oud was. Geur moutig, alcohol, lichtjes olijf (?), tikje port-achtig. Smaak neutraal tot licht zoetig. Vrij sterk alcohol gevoel. Medium body. Deze heeft wel een iets bittere afdronk. Niet veel verschil met een verse, hoewel toch iets veroudering.

Bij het opruimen van wat oude aantekeningen kwam ik ook een omschrijving tegen van dit bier, dat ik naast een Augustijn (toen nog zonder Blond) dronk. Geur was zoetig, moutig, alcohol. Smaak iets zoetig, moutig. Vrij stevig alcohol gevoel. Flink veel CO2, elke slok wordt eerst een bek vol schuim. Medium body. Weinig nieuws in de afdronk. Waarschijnlijk idd hetzelfde als Augustijn.
