Sample at JaBier’s refrigerator reduction tasting on 08/15/09. This brew is a clear dark amber color with a medium thin light beige head that dissipates slowly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Smoky nose with notes of malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of smoked malt and peppery hops along with some dark fruit. The finish is malty with a smoked aftertaste. Decent but not something I would go out of my way to try again.

Pours a clear amber with a minimal amount of head - medium-smoky aroma, with present (but not overpowering) warm notes of whiskey and vanilla, beachwood - fairly creamy in the mouth - quite sweet up front, with notes of caramelized sugars and charred wood - vanilla and burnt marshmallows - the whiskey shows up late, just in time to compliment some alcohol heat - the smoke comes in behind that fairly strong - finishes with a bit of cherry and lingering caramelized sugar - a bit sweet, but otherwise a decent beer.

12 oz. bottle. Dark amber color, big head the shortly fizzes away. Smell has a hint of smoke, but not cheesy or bacony. Definite wood smoke in the taste, though. There is also some malt and hops in play, a bit more than in other rauchs where smoke seems to be the only flavor component. Label describes history of smoking malt over beechwood. I think I catch a bit of mesquite, myself. It’s pretty nice, interesting, but not something I’d want every day.

Bottle thanks to Butters on 07/12/2009. Somewhat hazy brown body with a medium frothy tan head. Sweet chocolate and caramel aroma with a touch of spice. Sweet caramel and chocolate flavor with a touch of pepper. Medium full body with moderate carbonation.

Hazy amber color; generous head; nice lace. Sweet and fruity hop aroma; it has a light nose of creamy cheese; very interesting. The mouthfeel is initially round, but later it shows some weakness; strong caramel flavor, dry toffee, malty too; strong hopping, earthy character. An IPA with character.

Nice off-white head. Amber color. Floral hops aroma. Moderate, but not extreme hopping. Slight citrus flavor. Flowery overall. Well-balanced and with a good mouthfeel. Good, but not great.

Quickly descending head leaves lacing. Amber body. Slight smoky aroma. The best thing about this beer is that it is a rauchbier and I love rauchbiers, but ultimately, it is not as good as what comes from Aecht. Meat, BBQ, and smoked malt flavors dominate in this beer.

12 oz bottle purchased as part of a mix a six at Lukas in Overland Park, Kansas. Pour is deep brown and ruby with a nice full 2 inch tan head. Falls slowly with nice lacing. Aroma of charred toasted malt and some vegetal spiciness - almost green pepper. Also some milky cocoa. Taste is the cocoa - expressed with some toffee caramel, along with the (mildly) burnt charred malt from the nose and some of the earthy vegetal spice as well. Palate is thin, slick with above average carbonation. Finish is crisp and clean with some nice lingering char. Nicely drinkable beer.

Pours ruby brown with a slight beige head. Aromas of smoke and roasted caramel. Body is near full and carbonation is full, but mild. Flavor is primarily smoke, with dark fruits, oak, and likely bourbon. Certainly not scotch. Some vanilla. Different and good.

Sample at AleFest Columbus (06/27/09): This beer is a clear reddish-amber color with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Mild caramel malt aroma with a touch of hops. Light body with bready malt, caramel and mild hops flavors. The finish is sweet and malty with a short lightly hopped aftertaste. Straightforward and average overall.
