Cask at Mr Grundy’s, Derby. Pours a bright yellow with a sizeable white head and good lacing. Has an aroma of summer fruits, chiefly apples. Texture is rather watery, and flavours in the mouth are dominated by malts and sharp crisp apples. There are hints of general citrus too. After all that, the finisah is surprisingly bitter. Quaffable, but rather one dimensional.

Cask at Mr Grundy’s, Derby Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small beige head and good lacing. Has a distinct aroma of malts and vanilla. In the mouth the texture is creamy with low carbonation. Flavours are mainly malts and treacle with some traces of biscuit. Some fruit comes through in the finish. This is rather nice – possibly my favourite Mr Grundy beer,

Cask at Mr Grundys, Derby Pours a deep chestnut brown with a tight white head and good lacing. Not a particularly distinctive nose – just some vague aroma of oranges and chestnuts. In the mouth it starts off as caramel briefly, before passing on to mainly oranges with hints of nuts and berries. Finish is quite sharp. Quite nice – one of their better ones.

ORIGINAL RATING – AUGUST 2020 Cask at Standing Order, Derby Pours almost black with minimal head. Nose hads malts, molasses and a hint of milk. In the mouth it is fruity, with blackcurrants to the fore plus malts and traces of dark fruits and chocolate Has a very watery texture though. Finish is more dark fruits. Too much blackcurrant and not enough stout character. (was 6:2:6:3:10 = 2.7) RERATE MARCH 2022 : cask at Mr Grundys, Derby. Pours almost black with small foamy cream head. There’s a vaguely sweet aroma here, with lactose and dark fruits. Roasted malts and berry fruits in the mouth, plus some liquorice coming through later. Tastes a lot better than my original review would suggest – not the first time I’ve had to alter a review I’ve originally made at the Standing Order !

Cask at Mr Grundys, Derby Pours a reddish shade of “bitter brown” with a creamy white head and good lacing. A subtle aroma of bready malts. In the mouth the main taste is dark fruits, but also malts, raspberries and spices – though not very pronounced for any of them. Finish is bitter and spicy. Overall, a bit bland, but quite nice. More an Irish Red than a Bitter by the way.

Cask at Lych Gate, Wolverhampton. Has a nose that is strongly lemon – is that good or bad ? Pours a very pale yellow with a good white head. The mouth has an oily smoothness with hints of lemon and lime. Finish is bitter lemon. Not a bad beer, but nothing special. Wouldn’t by any stretch call it a bitter either.
