Description
Binghams Brewery opened its doors in 2010 and was located in the Berkshire village of Twyford. We’ve been brewing quality cask ales across the spectrum from lighter thirst slaying session beers (3.7%) to something with a bit more oomph (5.0%).

Moved to Woodley in 2020, brewing ceased shortly after.

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Black with a thin beige head. Light fizz. Vanilla is obvious in the whiff, and I was afeared this may be unbearably sweet. But no- it’s well balanced by the roasty malts and heavy coffee notes of the underlying stout. Incredibly smooth and silky. I love Binghams Doodle Stout and this is a great variant of it (unlike the hot dog version). Like a vanilla latte mixed with the flavour of a creme caramel dessert, but with the sweetness checked just enough by a sprinkling of dark roasted coffee beans and a hint of wood. Nice. Really nice. Possibly even be better than the original version. A superb stout.

Cask at local spoons. Dark orange / copper coloured pour with a sticky greyish cream head. Aroma is sweet nutty malts, grainstore, hints of treacle, berries. Flavour is composed of medium sweet nutty malts, apple, grain husks, tangy raisin. Palate is semi sweet, medium light bodied, OK cask condition. Lingering brown sugars and a hints of orange marmalade.

Cask at the Fisherman’s Cottage, Reading. Dull gold with a thin white head. Some dusty hop leafiness, a little grapefruit, but generally rather thin and bland. Not liking Bingham’s single hop series much so far; feel they should focus on their excellent stouts.

50cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Bottle conditioned - the first time I’ve seen a bottled version from this series. A crystal-clear pale straw colour with a billowing white head and moderate carbonation; light grapefruit aroma; big fruity taste, predominately grapefruit; but with some woody notes; and a long dry bitter finish with some fresh nettley herbs. Very enjoyable - it seems the bottling has helped develop the taste.

2l carry out from the brewery. A pale golden amber pour with no head; sweet clementine aroma; medium oily body with a sweet orange citrus taste and a satisfying grainy body; then a little spicy citrus bitterness, and surprisingly some warmth to finish. A good choice of (single) hop for a Christmas beer.

Cask at the Bear (JDW), Maidenhead. A slightly hazy pale straw pour with a white head; grapefruit aroma; big sweet red grapefruit taste, with a slightly chalky mouthfeel; and a lasting bitter finish. There’s certainly plenty of hops in this one.
