Description
Simon Poffley wants to revive the tradition of farmhouse-brewed beer in the Brecon Beacons. He opened the Left Bank Brewery, located in a farm on the northern edge of Llangorse Lake, in the spring of 2019 and has been brewing since then, using Brecon Beacons water from a borehole. He wants to start fermenting using naturally occurring wild local yeasts and local malt, barley and hops if he can find them.

The first batches were brewed before Spring 2013 at the Hornbeam Cafe, Hoe Street, Walthamstow, London. Later production moved to the Blackhorse Workshop, Blackhorse Lane, Walthamstow where we produced over a hundred brews. After brewing a few batches in Bermondsey production was moved to the Brecon Beacons.

Panda at home, thanks to Graham Grumbo, 21/07/24. Moderately hazed golden orange topped with a white cap that quickly thins to a swirl. Nose is herb, straw, light vegetal notes, hedgerow. Taste comprises tangy fruit esters, off notes, herb, vegetal, grains. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Oooh ... yeah ... not great. Wishy washy and not a welcome addition to my palate!

27/6/2024. Bottle bought at Beer Park, Llanelli. Pours very slightly hazy bronze brown with a small frothy off-white head. Aroma is lightly roasted, starchy, veggie, toffee, biscuit, stewed fruits. Moderate sweetness and bitterness with developing sourness. Light to moderate body, watery, average to soft carbonation. Got progressively worse than initial impressions. I like milds and this was the only bottled mild we found in Wales and it was very disappointing.

27/6/2024. Bottle bought at Beer Park, Llanelli. Pours clear amber orange with a lasting frothy just off-white head. Aroma is citrus, malt, rye bread, vinegar, slight urinal edge. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness, slight tartness. Moderate body, quite lively. Fair. 6362-12.29. Updated 11/10/2024. Cask at Nottingham Beer & Cider Festival 2024. Much more enjoyable from cask, aroma was hoppy, spiced, orange, rye, tropical fruits, biscuit. Had more bitterness to balance the sweetness. Still lacked some body, but was a lot less carbonated and much better than the bottle was. 8382-14.35

Bottled. Hazy orange colour with a small white head, which disappears quite quickly. Aroma is yeast, some smoked wood, mild spiciness. Flavour is smoked wet wood, ripe fruits, some alcohol, grains, herbs and mild fruitiness with some slight wood and quite dry. Quite messy as for the flavour, but the aroma worked a bit better.
