Description
Telegraph Brewing Co. was Santa Barbara’s first craft brewery. Brian Thompson founded the Belgian-inspired brewery in 2006.

Early American brewers adapted traditional European brewing techniques to the unique ingredients, climates, and tastes of the New World. At Telegraph Brewing Co., our beers are handcrafted in that same manner at our brewery in Santa Barbara, California. Making use of as many locally grown ingredients as we can, Telegraph's ales embody our philosophy that a local brewery should reflect the traditions of its region. Our goal is to produce uniquely American beer styles that are imbued with a spirit of invention and creativity, but always with a nod toward history.

In 2017 Utah-based Epic Brewing purchased Telegraph.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of JohnC. Pours a clear orangey brown with a lively and dissipating off-white head. Sweet cinnamon aroma - almost like a pumpkin ale. Solid body, lively carbonation with big bubbles. Lots of spice and brown sugar, some phenols and molasses. A little chocolate as well. Discreet bitterness. 231109

A lightly sour wit beer. Belgian yeast, coriander, and citrus. It is good as a wit beer, more sour than most, but this is not like any other Berlinner weisse have tasted. The yeast is seems wrong for that style. Clear yellow appearance.

Pours brown with amber edges and initially blooming tan (infected looking) head. The aroma is sharp acidic infection with murmurs of the sweet malt, nutty, mildly roasty notes in the background. The taste is the same with echoes of prunes, chocolate fudge, roasted malts and nuttiness well behind the bottle flaw going on here. So this rate is mainly based on the non-infected qualities of this beer.

Pours black with off white head. Aroma of rotten apple, hints of chocolate. Flavors, light malts, some chocolate, followed by apple notes. Light roast. I could get some elements of what the beer was supposed to be, but clearly did not pick up any hints of barrel or port in this one. Would not mind trying a newer batch. That’s 2 or 2 on Telegraph beers that seem to have been infected.

Bottle 65 cl. Hazy amber golden with a rough, off-white head. Aroma of yeast, nuts and strong alcohol. Quite full-bodied with plenty of nuts and dried fruit with a little yeastiness. Distinct alcohol and phenols in the finish with a somewhat unrefined hopping. 110709

750ml bottle courtesy of CaptainCougar at the DC Local Gathering. Light golden yellow color. Lacy, patchy head. Funky tart citrus and wheat flavors. Some wild yeast tastes, and some nice yeasty complexities. Quite enjoyable, smooth but flavorful. Lemony, earthy, but smooth and subtle as well.

Corked and caged 750ml bottle sampled at a DC Local gathering thanks to CaptainCougar. Pours a transparent, straw gold with a thin, ringing white head. Sour aroma of perfume and grass. Flavor is the same with light lemon. Thin and watery, not as puckering as you’d expect.

Courtesy of sebletitje. Pours gold with a moment of a white head. The aroma is a bit bubbly tart notes, some banana and wheat. The taste explodes with carbonation making for a thin mouth feel. I get tart apricot, some wheat and a bit of harshness from the carbonation. It ends with lingering wheat and dryness.

The pour is a completely hazy golden/straw color. It is perfectly hazy yet a light color and full of light. Aroma is a very stinky straw with some lacto, (light stinky cheese). There is also a strong salty/earthy mineral twang all over the place. Flavor is that salty earth as well, tartness all over and a weak wheat behind it all. Has a spritzy, sparkling mouthfeel. A perfect Berliner Weisse, not sure why it is labeled a sour ale.
750mL cork and wire, bottled on 01/12/09, Duvel tasting glass.
