Description
The Clun Brewery was founded by Matt Williamson and Jack Limond in 2007 to supply local craft beers to the White Horse in Clun, which Jack has owned since 2001. The brewery started as an upgraded homebrew, brewing 9 gallons at a time with Burco boilers as their water baths. This basic setup gave inconsistent results, and in 2010 they moved into an old garage with two 72 gallon barrels. The extra capacity helped Clun build a local reputation, and their range of beers regularly feature as guest ales in over 60 Shropshire pubs as well as The White Horse.

Bottle shared at Chrisso’s May 2014 tasting 25/05/2014. Thanks to minute Matt for the new brewery tick. Aroma is spicy hop, green veg, some malts. Golden coloured pour with a lasting white head. Flavour is harsh grainy, grassy hop, harsh bitterness. Palate is thin, tonic water, harsh on the tongue.

Bottle shared at Chriso’s post GBBF minidig, 16/08/14. Lightly hazed pale golden with moderate off white spotting and edgework. Nose is pale malt, light melon, straw, faint plastic tones, citric rind. Taste comprises citric peel, light smoke, straw, lemon rind. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close. Underwhelming - yawn!

Bottle - Sweet pale malts and a bit of citrus. Hazy gold with a thin white head. Effervescent bitter bite and some earthy peat like flavors. I quite like the earthy notes.

Tasting at the ever gracious ChrisO’s. Lightly hazy gold beer, Good size head, very pale cream colour. Palate is airy and light with superfine carbonation. Light airy malt, little dry cream and a touch of paper. Whisper of orange peel. Light dry finish. Okay.

500ml bottle from Ludlow Spring Festival May 14, drunk on the train after an intense couple of hours in Brewdog. This just about finished me off. Mild floral hops, citrus and a soft bitterness. Decent pale.

Cask, handpump at The Tram, Eardisley, Herefordshire, Tuesday 31st December 2013 (New Years Eve) Golden in colour with a white head. There is a light citrus fruitiness to this beer but the malt threatens to envelop all, I think a little more hops and a tweak here and there with the malts this could be better, as it is, it’s fine. Sweetish easy drinking golden bitter with a slight bitter edge, I had two pints so it can’t have been too bad I guess. A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov12 3.1

Half-pint, hand-pulled in The Crown Inn, Oakengates on 6th Dec 13. Almost clear golden colour (the wheat malt stopped it being crystal clear I suppose) with a good white covering that held well. Not a lot going on aroma wise: mild hop and fruit esters, but you had to dig for them. The taste was a pleasant blend of Pale Malts and semi-bitter hops, couldn’t find any wheat flavours. Pleased to have tried it: OK, but not really exciting, just a run-of-the-mill Pale Ale.

Gravity cask @ Ludlow Food Festival. Lots of bold hops here with a good turnout from the citrus contingent. Quite refreshing. This should definitely be in more Shropshire real ale pubs, no doubt about that.

5.9% ABV cask: hand-pulled pint in The Cock Hotel, Wellington, Shropshire on 21 June 2013. Yellow/golden body, bright and clear, on top a pure white head of small bubbles. Sadly it had the citrus nose and feel I dislike about so many beers currently brewed in the UK. Only mild in it’s grapefruit and lemon flavours and aroma it still put me off. Strong enough to hide the alcohol, but not completely overpowering in it’s citrus base to allow some maltiness notes to almost appear and try to balance the brew out. Looking and tasting passed that citrus ’problem’ it is a well produced beer and refreshing, just not what I wanted.
