It was sometime in the early 2000s that one member of the community had an idea to utilize the excess harvest by making cider. Initially a hobby, Ampleforth Abbey Drinks is now run by lay staff for the benefit of the community, supplying many local farmshops, visitors centres and pubs with our award-winning produce.

Bottle shared in London - cheers! Pours clear brown with a creamy, tan head. Medium sweet flavour, nice toffee and brown bread, some Belgian yeast. Medium bodied, lightly oily, with fine carbonation. Sweet finish, more brown bread and toffee and Belgian yeast. Sound.

330ml bottle: BBE Nov 17. Poured into a Westmalle Trappist chalice at home on 1st July 17, the last beer in a mini-tasting session with myself. Mahogany colour, clean looking: the head a thin off-white wispy affair. Malty front to the brew, semi-sweet throughout, slight bitterness in the lasting finish. Decent.

500ml bottle. Golden colour, no head and mellow fruity apple aroma with some barnyard hints. Flavour is apple, fruity, sweetish, some oak, vanilla and slight tartness. Oily mouthfeel, medium bodied, low carbonation, dry lightly tannic finish. Well balanced, very drinkable.

Bottle from Buckfast Abbey. It pours deep mahogany red - brown with a thick off - white head. The nose is bitter - sweet, candied fruits, sweet berry, earthy roast and coffee grounds. The taste is earthy roast, toasty, charred wood, cocoa nibs, light spice, dark fruits, some alcohol warmth, coffee, candy and liquorice with a dry, toasted finish. Medium - full body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Decent.

Bottle from that shop in Malton. Appearance - deep brown to black with a generous fluffy head. Nose - a bit meaty at outset. Taste - toffee, nuts and burnt biscuit. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a dry but lacking in balance finish. Overall - somehow this isn’t quite like Last Trappe or Westmalle.

Hazy, reddish-brown beer with an off-white head. Fruity, yeasty aroma. The beer is quite lively so initially the flavour is obscured somewhat by fizz on the tongue. There’s a fair bit of banana in the taste and perhaps a touch of apple as well. Yeasty, bready quality to it. It’s not as rich as you might hope for a beer of this sort and there’s a bit of an unfortunate alcohol-y aftertaste as well which isn’t really concealed by anything else.
