clear red amber, smooth offwhite head. hoppy and roasted malty aroma, a bit dull/flat, but clearly black ipa. flavor is malty, roasted malty, hoppy, flowery hoppy. again a bit dull/flat.

clear brown, smooth light yellow head. spicy maple syrup and caramel aroma, notes of pepper or chili, flavor is maple syrup, bitter malts, woody note, faint spicy, somewhat caramelly.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of JanLaursen. Pours a hazy deep orangey brown with an off-white head - some tiny impurities. Sweet maple syrup aroma combined with a little pumpernickel. Medium body, sweet maple flavour - entirely authentic? - a little burned caramel as well. Dry finish. Not great but certainly better than its score here! 290512

From my dear parents who purchased this at an Ottawa LCBO: Pours a brown with barely any head. There is a very weak aroma of something vaguely familiar to roasted malts. Taste is bland. The balance or tight-rope that is a bIPA is violated here by basically nullifying the hops (I understand that this is a Black Pale Ale as opposed to a bIPA, but still). In effect, I think they are just trying to cash in on the Black IPA trend by selling us a mediocre Brown Ale with another name.

Originally rated February 2005. This amber ale poured a golden-copper colour which was beautiful. Unfortunatly, it stopped there. Head was o.k. but did not have much retention. Some lace occured. Medium carbonation made of tiny, tiny bubbles. Bigger bubbles were at the bottom of my glass... just sitting there like there is no tomorrow. The nose was of sweet malt with hints of floral and fruit scents. The taste was sweet with a grain (cereal) finish. This brew seems young. It is a new arrival at "The Beer Store" in Ottawa. I think I will sit the rest of my 6-pack for a few weeks and age it. Trafalgar makes great meads, but beer they will have to work at.

Smell has some hops and roast malts. Taste has more malt, almost burnt tasting with a little more hops. It’s not bad, especially for a Trafalgar, but not something I’m going to go running back to with a lot of enthusiasm either. The burnt malt taste overtakes the hops too much and leaves with some sort of limbo beer. 650 bottle.

Bottle: Poured a clear light amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of unrefined grain and weird vegetable aroma is really not pleasant. Taste is also a spectacular mess between some unrefined grain and weird cereal notes with are top-off by some rotten vegetables. This one ended up in the drain quiet fast – can’t believe the LCBO is still willing to distribute this crap.

Originally rated April 2005. Pours a darker-then-medium red with a big fizzy head that reminds me off a soft drink, but stays a few seconds more. Lots of particules floating around. Fruity nose mixed with lots of alcohol. Thin mouthfeel and not much taste. Alcohol going to the head, that’s about it. Mild fruity berry aftertaste. Still waiting to find a good Trafalgar product. Average for now.

A nice new bomber at the LCBO which caught my eye (and interest - funny coming from Trafalgar). Pours a real dark brown (a tad darker than cola) with a big frothy beige head that stays up well and created beautiful dirty lacing. Fresh hop nose with the roasted malt well-balanced in back. Medium-thin bodied. Again, the hop seems a bit dominant in the taste with the dark malt underneath. Nice grapefruit bitterness lingers in the aftertaste. Seems like after a while, coffee is at the tip of my tongue and butterscotch could be smelt. Quite a nice, easy-drinking, black IPA and very interesting coming from this brewery. One of their best so far.
