Bottle from Craft Brewed. Pours a clearish gold with a finger of foam that hangs around then dissipates. Light bready nose with faint lemon and grain husks. Some grass and mineral flavors. Dry on the palate, dry finish with grain and lemon. Simple and well executed.

Drinking the updated version, a wannabe hybrid NE-West Coast IPA mostly situated in the Pacific side of the equation. Not bad, just nondescript, with a pine-resin backbone propping up modest cracker-caramel malts and not-quite-juicy tropical citrus hops. Notes of dank, cat pee, and flowers pop up, as does a lemon-mango-grapefruit undertone leading to a clingy, bitter fade. Pours a mostly clear orange-gold (where's the haze?) with a brief white head and no lace. More juice on the nose than in the pint. Perky, medium-bodied texture is good for the style, although it lacks the pillowy sumptuousness of most NEIPAs. Decent, but not a standout in a crowded style.

Hits all the right porter notes but with a distinct lack of complexity. Offers up chocolate, hints of coffee, and a nutty undercurrent, but fails to string these together into a satisfying porter finish. Back end grows dry and bland with a fizzy, nondescript fade. Chocolate and nuts in the aroma, and while the texture is appropriately thick, it’s got an unexpectedly cheap carbonated feel. Skippable.

Bottle from Trader Joe's. Pours a deep brown to black, with a small beige head that dissipates quickly. Dark coffee roast, faint cocoa powder aromas. Slightly creamy, cafe latte undertones, but a cola-like mouthfeel. More coffee and bakers chocolate on the palate. Semi dry finish. Definitely more like a schwartz with a bit more muscle, but abv hidden well. Solid beer.

On tap at Flying Saucer Nashville. Pours a clear copper with a near white head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has grass and light pine supported by a good amount of grain and light bread. Flavor is similar with lots of grass with some grains and a hint of pine underlying.

Good caramel nose tinged with toasted grain. Appearance is atrocious, though, coming out of the bottle a fizzy orange with absolutely no head or lacing. Tastes overly sweet, the caramel and toffee notes coming on very strong before growing cloy and medicinal on the back end. Minor bitterness on the finish leads to a sugary, bready fade. Abrasive texture, over-carbonated and cheap-feeling. Pretty bad.

Draft at Martin’s BBQ downtown. Pours a clearish brown with a small finger of foam. Dark chocolate, light coffee and caramel notes. Clean with some nice roasty character. Some peppercorns on the finish underneath the caramel and dark chocolate. With all this going on, never cloying and goes down like water. DIggin’ this one!
