Description

Sampled draft @ Bierfestival Brugge 2016. Dark red amber with a solid off-white head. Nose is big on glue, balsamic vinegar with sour oaky malt, low sugar & big on vinous balsamic vinegar. Taste is light acetone with cherries, lower glue than in the smell, brown sugar, oak, puckering, low pain, plenty of balsamic vinegar. Quite malty taste & body. A tad too heavy on the Oud Bruin glue notes but overall a nice strongly puckering balsamic vinegar Oud Bruin. Nice.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy bright golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big tart lemon, lime, pear, apple, white wine, peppercorn, hay, straw, herbal, grass, leather, oak, musty funk, light white vinegar, bread, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/spicy yeast, wine barrel, earthy hop, and light pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart lemon, lime, pear, apple, white wine, peppercorn, hay, straw, herbal, grass, leather, oak, musty funk, light white vinegar, bread, and yeast/oak earthiness. Good amount of yeast spiciness, herbal bitterness, and tannic tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, pear, apple, white wine, peppercorn, hay, straw, herbal, grass, leather, oak, musty funk, light white vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy yeast, wine barrel, earthy hop, and light pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from tart/bitter/spicy notes as well. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately tannic/acidic/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding Belgian wild ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy yeast, wine barrel, earthy hop, and light pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

33cl bottle: picked up in De Bierboom, Brugge in Dec 2015. Poured into a Hoegaarden Grand Cru stemmed tulip glass at home in Jan 2016. No sediment left the bottle, so I got an almost clear golden bodied beer with a full and deep white head. The aroma is yeasty and also metallic in nature, with a fruity base. Taste is also slightly metallic with again mixed fruits and some yeast traces. A bit dry for my palate and leaning towards sour at times, again not my thing. Different and interesting, but not for me: scored objectively.
