Description
OWA beer was born in May 2006. It was born and designed for the best Belgium and Japanese fusion food experience. It is indeed a very good combination with SUSHI and YAKITORI (weet soy sauce). The brewery is located in the famous district of Uccle in Brussels, only 2kms from the Moeder Lambic in Saint Gilles. Leo Imai started to brew in December 2008 and in 2009 he made a kitchen laboratory in the brewery, and researched the best marriage with japanese food.

No head but a small white rim, very faintly veiled orange-amber beer with Grünstich Sour, woody lambic nose with lots of sweet caramel - and even sweetener, IMO. Sourish, tannines, better, but the finish has again sticky caramel, even speculoos(spices). Lemon, lemonfudge, unripe fruit. Dry-out effect combined with stickyness - ugh! It’s not really bad - but it’s exactly how a lambic ought NOT to be.

Bottle at Délices et Caprices. Clear deep golden liquid with medium white head. Aroma of flowers, roses, spices, lemon, red apple skin and cinnamon. Wow, this is different. Taste is light to medium sweet and light sour with notes of cinnamon, flowers and earth. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Weird, but still quite nice.

Beige head on a very dark body. Coffee esters in the nose along with mild chocolate notes. The yeast also has an aroma which adds an extra dimension to the smell. The taste follows the aromas, the yeast and dark malty flavours blending together nicely. Dry and roasted malts more than a sweet malty brew, this is a solid beer for the winter months and I enjoyed my sample very much.

33cl Bottle from De Hopduvel, Gent. Clear golden colour, white head. Aroma is light fruity, esters, grain, cheap lager-like. Flavour is grainy, light sweet, fruity, esters, more grain, light skunk, bitter grainy finish. Light-bodied, over-carbonated. Not very nice imo.

“Brewed by a Japanese brewer in Belgium” says my bottle – I believe that he recently went back to Japan. Does this brewery / enterprise still exist actually? First contract brewed @ De La Senne (brilliant) followed by De Ranke (brilliant), St. Feuillien (very to good) then Van Den Bossche (okayish) so not the best evolution as far as I am concerned. I suppose the latter were more willing and had more to gain by taking contract brewing assignments. Label easily fools you into thinking that it is a Japanese beer upon sight which is the point if I am not mistaken. This is mainly meant to be sold at Japanese restaurants – odd but apparently profitable concept. A similar concept appears to be followed by Iki beer made by De Proef. Pours amber orange with a very patchy white head. Smells fruity, sweet herbal, some grass, sweet malts and touch of sweet malts and candy sugar. Taste is sweet herbal, dried orange peel, toffee, lightly metallic, grassy hops, sweet tea, ginseng, toffee, light candy sugar, nice hops. Carb. Is a bit soda-like. And the ginseng, tea & metals bit makes it come across a bit cheap but still this is actually quite enjoyable. Nice. (33 cl. bottle @ home. From Willems. BBF 22/09/2013)

seems like i have the first rating strangely enough ? didnt realize this was as rare as it seems to be... had it at horeca expo (ghent) . al others lambics were out, and this was one of the last glasses of the lemon edition ( wich this is ) pours light blonde / hazy . no foam tastes sourness ( yet not extreme) of the lambic, combined with the sourness of the lemon. the outcome is kinda what you’d expect. its not extreme sour ( not the likes of hanssens or such) and its not waawing. but for a small , ( i also think beginning) brewerie like this, this is actualy VERY nice done !
