Description
OWA beer was born in May 2006. It was born and designed for the best Belgium and Japanese fusion food experience. It is indeed a very good combination with SUSHI and YAKITORI (weet soy sauce). The brewery is located in the famous district of Uccle in Brussels, only 2kms from the Moeder Lambic in Saint Gilles. Leo Imai started to brew in December 2008 and in 2009 he made a kitchen laboratory in the brewery, and researched the best marriage with japanese food.

Bottle shared at my 5K tasting at Bruce’s pad, big thanks to our host for this one, 13/11/13. Batch 2 #840/1000. Hazed golden orange with a moderate off white covering. Nose is smoked citric dipped straw, burnt plum skins, barnyard, light funkadelics. Taste comprises burnt straw, tarte plums, lemon rind, dank wood, musty. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light spritz, tarte fleshy fruit finale. Decent.

Bottle shared at my 5K tasting at Bruce’s pad, big thanks to our host for this one, 13/11/13. Batch 2 #314/1000. Hazed golden with a moderate white head. Nose is cherry blossom alright, sugars, grass, nutty, light berry notes, floral. Taste comprises cherry blossom, rose petal, floral, lightly tartened berry fruit tang. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, clean floral finale. Ok but overly floral for me, does what is says on the tin for sure!

Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London - thanks to Mr. Bruce. Pours lightly hazy yellow-gold with a frothy white head. Smells good, some grass and wood, mild funk. Light sweet flavor with mild acidity, some lemon, some grassy bitterness, dry wood. Light bodied with fine, caressing carbonation. Clean finish with mild sour bite, good offsetting grassy bitterness, tangy lemon. Lovely stuff.

1/XI/13 - 37.5cl bottle from Délice & Caprice (Brussels) @ home - BB: III/2016 (2013-1022)

Clear orange beer, big aery white head, unstable, little adhesive. Aroma: lots of ginger, ginger bread, cinnamon, cherry syrup, marzipan, sweet cookie dough. Very weird! MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: sourish start, citric acidity, yet very soft, lots of cinnamon, bit of dried ginger powder, little woody, some tannins. Aftertaste: soft bitterness, citrus, dough, cinnamon, gingerbread. Very weird but enjoyable beer!

Bottled, with the brewer. Huge yuzu nose, big citrus, very light funk and leather. Flavor is big yuzu but not sweet. Deceptive, as it seems sweet at first, but that is the huge fruit. It is actually very dry, clean, with only a bit of lambic character (4 month old jonge lambic is used). There is some horse blanket and dust, though. Crisp palate. Cloudy, lemon-gold color. Very nice.

Bottle with the brewer. Almost black, orange-brown with a huge, airy head. Rounded, woody nose, chocolate, figs, cherry, spicy yeast. Great BA falvor, subtle yet unmistakable. Smooth, rich, great chocolate, dried fruits come out more than in the original. Silky, soft palate.

Second batch. Bottle nr. 350/1000. 75 cl. bottle sampled @ GBF 2013. Darker amber orange than expected with some white bubbles. Smell is fruity, tad sweet, flowers, oranges, lemon, flowers with some funk. Taste is bitter oranges, musty with some funk, citrus, light cinnamon, malts showing a bit, some bitter citrus peel and some barn. Reasonable body and little in the way of carb. Sakura is a very interesting “fruit” for sure to add to lambic, I really enjoyed this, quite a bit more than the Ume one. Bit confussed about the complaints about sweetness here because from what I get sakura simply has a very sweet and rose-like flavour. You wouldn’t expect a banana-lambic to be über-sour either would you? (Thx! to the RB Crew for sharing).
