Description
The reason Jamie Emmerson and Irene Firmat started Full Sail in the first place was to build a company that was completely different from the ones where we’d previously worked. It wasn’t about business as usual. It was about finding our calling in life — about truly appreciating our “human resources,” and balancing work, life, family and friends in a way that makes life truly worth living.

Determined to make world-class beer in our own backyard, one of our first, and perhaps best, decisions was to invest in new, state-of-the-art brewing equipment. So we bit the bullet, laid down our borrowed cash, and spent the better part of 1987 installing the new system. Our love for the environment is what drives our sustainable practices, so pure water, local ingredients and responsible processes are poured into each and every tasty pint.

I believe I had the original (1999) vintage, bottled, as well as subsequent batches through 2004, no idea why I never rated this. Pours a clear, cherry-ruddy-amber, large, beige head with moderate retention. Bright red fruits, soft vanilla and plentiful toffee with perhaps less alcohol and monotonous medium malts than some (certainly was better in that regards in its time). Soft, malty, rich, sweet, toasted and with figs, cherries, raisins and vanilla. Drying alcohol but not hot. Lingering toast, caramel, toffee and such. Yeah, it's a big barleywine. Younger bottles do exhibit some piney-like hop bitterness, which is appreciated. Nothing revolutionary or overly interesting, but passable and competent.

Bottle. It's been a long time since I rated a Full Sail. Pours a clear orange hue with a medium white head. A light fruity nose. Sweet, lots of oranges, oily, smooth. Not really a hop showcase, the malt is equal, very oily and perfume hops dominate. Slightly spicy.

16oz can from Hops & Bottles. Hazy orange golden pour, thin silky white head. Aroma is tough to navigate, very faint citrus, latent maltiness. Taste is malty with light citrus. Not sure what they were going for. I miss the old Full Sail.
