(22 mars 2013)

Tap (Hivernale): Poured a deep black color ale with a generous head. Aroma of light dry roasted malt with vanilla and bourbon notes and some chocolate cream notes is quite enjoyable. Taste is a mix between some vanilla and bourbon notes with some chocolate cream notes and some light dry bitter coffee notes. Body is a bit thin with light creamy texture and some good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed and the only improvement point is that a bigger stout might have fared better with the amount of bourbon notes that can be found in this beer.

LA CHOUAPE - NOUVELLE MOISSON - definitely not the same beer as HOUBLON FRAIS (see my rating below) I hope I bought a bad bottle because this beer is disgusting. Aroma is similar to decaying herbs. I don’t know what it is but it smells barn or rotten hay with a touch of sour. Appearance is gold with orange glints, very hazy with white, thick and creamy head. Little lacing fading fast. Taste is awful: like old barn rotten hay with a sour aftertaste. This beer is definitely sour. Had to trow it down the drain. HOUBLON FRAIS - LA CHOUAPE (Tasted in october 2012) Aroma: Cinnamon, caramel and pepper; a surprisingly malted and yeasty nose for an IPA although we can also find herbal notes of fresh cut grass. well balanced aromas. Appearance: Amber brown, hazy, average creamy pale brown head, sticking well to glass with fair lacing. Taste: Attack is malted at the beginning with notes of cinnamon, caramel, clove and nutmeg. Then, fresh hops are taking over with herbal notes, fresh cut grass and hay, leaving a smooth bitterness with a long lasting finale. Very interesting to discover undried fresh hops flavors for the first time. Another country beer by La Chouape. Very interesting for those who want to discover the taste of undried hop. Aroma: 7 Appearance: 3 Taste: 7 Palate: 3 Overall: 14 Total 3.4

Tasted on tap at La Chouape Pub in St-Félicien on July 31st. Aromas: Mainly molasses and oatmeal. Appearance: Very dark and opaque black. Wonderful head and lacing. Flavors: Oatmeal, molasses and coffee with a strong roasted bitterness. Interesting combination of cereals and bitterness. I’ve never tasted oatmeal beer before and I have to admit that it’s not my favorite style. But it certainly does the job.

Tasted on tap at La Chouape Pub in St-Félicien on July 31st. Aroma: A good balance of hops, hay, and cereal notes. Appearance: Clear gold, nice creamy head and good lacing. Taste: Flavors are mainly herbal with a lot of cereal notes. A good country reminder. Hops could be sticking out more though. I’d say it’s more like a pale ale than an IPA.

Bought this by accident confusing with a better beer. Smells like nothing really, or I don’t have a nose. There’s nothing overtly wrong here. Ends up a little sour after a few sips. Pours cloudy at least and head retains. Soft carbonation. Isn’t bad at all for what it is, really. Bottle from Peluso d-pan.
