On cask at the Royal Hotel, Bolton le Sands. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - creamy chocolate. Light smoke. Taste - more creamy chocolate, light liquorice. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long balanced finish. Overall - lovely stout at session strength.

Cask at Fulflood Arms, Winchester. 16/12/16. Nil aroma. Chestnut. No head. Sweet, develops into some bitterness. Caramel, fruits, syrup. Light to medium bodied. Easy drinking.

Cask at the Prince of Wales, Farnborough. An attractive deep bronze colour with a bright amber glint (perhaps because I’m sitting in front of a roaring fire in the pub), and a loose cream head; the aroma is of molasses; and there’s a rich, oily feeling in the mouth with a sweet toffee taste; then a drier finish with some sour fruit and brown sugar. A satisfying beer - just the thing for a cold winter’s day.

Bottle from the brewer’s own stand at the Good Food Show at Birmingham NEC. Slightly grubby amber-brown with a thick cream head. Toffee, malt, Dundee cake and a light dry woodiness in the finish. There are better beers of this style out there but compared to Wesr Berkshire’s normal dross it’s pretty decent.

On tap at the Bear (JDW), maidenhead. Straw in colour with a thin white head; weak grassy aroma; crisp, grassy taste; then a sweeter finish with a lasting grassy bitterness. Fresh and refreshing, and better than the average macro lager.

The Falcon, Clapham Junction. Nil aroma. A hazy white gold, with sparse white head. Bitter. Light bodied, chalky finish. There grapefruit in there, but it’s really a one note beer. Just nothing goong on. Can’t believe it won some competition for a new wheat ale.

Cask at the Pot Kiln, Frilsham, 28th October 16. Pours light straw, golden, aroma is straw, peach. Taste is clean, light hops, slight bitter, some fruit. Easy drinking, but nothing special.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. A pale amber pour with a thin white head; grapefruity citrus aroma; bitter orange marmalade taste; and a fruity finish with a lasting bitterness and some spicy warmth. Rather good.

Cask at the Back of Beyond, Reading. Hazy deep gold with a thin white head. Rather harsh hop bitterness on the first taste eases somewhat to reveal grass and straw with a little grapefruit. The bitterness re-asserts itself in the finish and it ends up being refreshing rather than harsh. It’s a bit grubby and rough round the edges but not bad overall.
