A black beer wih a disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet with primary notes of roasted malt, but also hints of chocolate. The flavor is sweet and again with roasted malts being most dominant and leading to a dry roasted end.

Orangey-amber colour. Chewy aroma with hint of malt and a big fat chewy character. Rich, resiny hop body with plenty of crystal malts as well.

Copper colour. Earthy-hoppy aroma with crystal malts. Fresh grapefruity hops, hint of crystal. Balanced, tasty. One of the better, and more robust, examples of the style.

Thanks to Bück Dich for sending this one! This looks real good going into the glass, light amber color, large white head and the aroma is light yeast and pine. The flavor balance is slightly bitter with a bit of detracting sourness in the finish.

Thanks to Bück Dich for this one! This is a beautiful beer. Tall, off white head that sits on a clear garnet beer. Lots of caramel and some yeasty notes in the aroma. Smooth body that delivers a lightly sweet nutty brew that has a nice dryness in the finish. I’d like a bit more body, but this is a real nice winter treat. I could drink another.

Deep chestnut brown body, medium/thin clumping tan head. Black malt aroma with roasted coffee and piney hops. Surprisingly hoppy body (of the pine cone variety) adds a spicy character to the black malts, coffee, and roast. The black malts impart just a hint of dark fruit. The hops are an unusual twist; I think the same hops are used in Victory Storm King. Thanks Bill (batkins) for the bottles!

2004 draught pint at Redbones. Wonderful deep red with dark brown tinges, quite transluscent with a small off-white head. Smells of sweet malt, light spicing (cinnamon) and lightly spicy hops that are very fresh. Flavor starts out sweet and spicy with the hops being present but not bitter, just fresh and spicy. Light toffee and toasted malt, sweet caramel and molasses on the finish with more herbal hops-like flavor. Full bodied and delicious with a smooth, creamy consistency and very low carbonation. Beautiful! 8/5/8/4/17

2005 draught pint at Redbones. More crystal malt heavy with that profound hardness and a thick sugariness as well. Cherries, tangerines and bitter oranges crowd the palate and seem at odds with the (rather acidic) roasty/toasty malts. Seemed rather jumbled and in the end it goes from a bit too sweet, to too bitter without much room for in between. Though there certainly is no skimping on ingredients and the overall texture was about the same as last year. Rating is an average. 8/4/7/3/14

Bottle. Dark beer with a big beige head. Huge roasty aroma with some coffee. Peaty flavor with some roasted malts. Some smoothness to it, but just a hint of acidity at the end (not really from any bitterness). Bit thin and easy drinking.
