Description
Barrier Brewing Co. is the collaborative effort of brewers Evan Klein and Craig Frymark, located in Oceanside, NY. Brewing their first batches on a 1bbl system (2 kegs at a time!) in June 2010, the two expanded the business to a 5bbl brewhouse in June 2012 which operated for four short months before being severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy. After several months of rebuilding, Barrier reopened in late-February 2013. The brewery currently produces nearly 50 different beers throughout the year totaling 1500bbl annually, all of which is self-distributed throughout the NY metro area.

Tap at Rattle’n’Hum NYC, 20/05/13. Mid black with a medium tan head. Nose is roasty malt, light smoke, bitter chocolate. Taste is roast malt forward, chocolate, mineral bite, touch lactose. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, roasty finish. A more than decent porter - really liking the stuff from Barrier!

Location: Draft at Ginger Man, 5/18/13

Aroma: The aroma of this one has some citrus fruit hops, grainy malts, and a bit of spice
Appearance: The pour is a hazed golden-orange color with a small white head on it
Flavor: The taste is a little sweet, grainy/bready, with a light-medium hop bitterness as well
Palate: The body is fairly light, it is easy to drink, with a smooth, and clean finish
Overall Impression: I thought this one was a pretty solid APA, but not a standout. The flavors are solid, but maybe a tad light. Overall, it still works nicely as a light, drinkable summer beer.

Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 7

Location: Draft at Ginger Man, 4/12/13

Aroma: The aroma is mix of roasted malts, chocolate malts, and citrus/pine hops
Appearance: A dark brown color with a medium sized beige head that leaves mid-heavy lace
Flavor: Well balanced between the medium malty sweetness and medium hop bitterness
Palate: It has a solid feel, that gets just a tinge metallic as it inches toward the dry/bitter finish
Overall Impression: Overall, I thought this was a solid example of the style, but it wasn't a great one. Still though, this is another nice beer from Barrier, and it is certainly worth trying.

Location: Sampled at Tap NY, 4/27/13

Aroma: The aroma is a bit fruity, with some malty notes, a bit of hop, and some spice
Appearance: It pours a clear golden-orange color with a small white head
Flavor: The taste is much the same, a little sweet, a little bit spicy, and a little bit tart too
Palate: The body is fairly light, but not overly watery considering that it clocks in under 4%
Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty solid beer. It isn't anything amazing, but it's nice to try a solidly made low alcohol beer every now and again (especially in the midst of a festival). Good stuff.

Location: Draft at Spuyten Duyvil, 4/13/13

Aroma: The aroma has plenty of Belgian yeast and spice, with some citrus fruits as well
Appearance: This one pours a hazy gold-orange color, with a small head and white lace
Flavor: The flavor leans way more to the Belgian side (yeast/spice), than it does to the hop side
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a fairly clean mouthfeel, and a mild dryness
Overall Impression: Overall, this one is very Belgiany with some hops notes as well. It is not really very bitter at all, it is much more yeasty/spicy. It makes a ton of sense to me that this is on here as a Belgian Ale and not as an IPA as the name might have suggested.

Medium-bodied, a bit alcoholic. Nice. 8/3/7/3/14=3.5

Drought. Rich yellow color, off-white foamy large head, strong hops aroma, bitter taste, fizzy, long finish with a bit too bitter aftertaste. A very hoppy IPA.
