You know you've arrived as a faux-craft brewery when you unleash your California Common. Okay, I felt a bit mean writing this because this is actually a good beer. Brownish gold and clear with a small white head and decent lacing. Aroma is full of that slightly souring note of Everards yeast which does this recipe no favors. However the taste is a revelation. Sweet, nutty and malty. Absolutely relevatory stuff. Departs with notes of almond and Horlicks. Light body, medium carbonation. Everards have hits and many misses nut this is a recipe they were made for.

Cask at Bod, Alsager (not yet listed on RateBeer) – as Old Original. Pours a hazy bright copper with minimal off-white head and good lacing. Bit of a strange aroma of brown sauce with some traditional hops thrown in. In the mouth it’s a bit hard to nail down, as almost every sip is different ! It starts off as bitter and fruity with flavour of nuts to the fore. Subsequent tastings give walnuts, marmalade, maple, hints of ginger and some underlying sweetness – not necessarily in that order. Finish is dry and slightly bitter. Despite it all, this is a decent beer.

I ♡ 23? What the fuck does that mean? Anyway, cask at the Old Horse, Leicester. Dark red, very translucent with a lacing-inducing off-white head. Resi ous malt in the aroma, some redcurrant, some toffee. Gorgeous sweet and mega malty taste with an excess of that wonderful amber malt flavour. Little bit dirty and watery in the finish with some hop bitterness. Soft carbonation. Not the best Wverarda has to offer but pretty damn good.
