Cask at the Craft Beer Co. on 5th October 2011. Ink-black with initial pale brown head and no lacing. Rich ’parfum’ of pungent earth and roast malts. Thick blend of roast malt, pipesmoke, wood, chicory and vanilla in-mouth; richly bitter yet rounded finish including grass, vanilla and graininess. Thick full-bodied stout, yet not too heavy mouthfeel. Excellent - especially that the alcohol does not override.

On tap at Craft Beer. Opaque black brown beer. Tidy little tan head. Semi soft and semi dry palate. Moderate carbonation, smooth. Rich tangy dark malt with subtle red fruits underneath. Traces of coffee and unsweet dark chocolate. Quite a juicy finish with licorice spice and hop bitterness. Semi dry finale. Not bad at all, quite a lot going on here. A more luxiriant mouthfeel would better suit it’s rich flavours.

Cask at CBC, London. Pours a shiney, black-brown with a low, off-white head. Bit of cocoa in the nose, some berries and yoghurt. Yep, yoghurt. My suspicions of yoghurt are confirmed in the flavor - more sweet yoghurt. Mild roastiness, some earthy and woody bitterness, some light grass and pine. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Moderate roast finish, some more berries and dairy. Kinda weird, but alright. Would need to ramp up the hop character a bit to respectable Black IPA.

Cask-conditioned at the Cask Pub and Kitchen 19/08/2011. Clear amber with a slight white head. Sweetish, cereal malt aroma with a hint of apricot and grassy hop. Malty, slightly spicy flavour with some sweetness and a gently bitter finish. A decent low ABV beer.

Cask (handpump) at the Darlington Spring Thing Beer Festival. ABV is 4.5%. Golden colour, low head. Moderate aroma and flavour of fruity and piney American hops, in a more subdued English version of an APA. Quite nice.

Cask-conditioned at the Carter’s Rest, Wroughton, Wiltshire January 2011. Near black with a decent tan head. My notes are sparse, but I enjoyed this beer which had plenty of chocolate and dark fruits, with a full mouth feel and roasty dry finish. A great introduction to a new brewery.
