In the period after 1850, the De Meester-Boelens brewery was founded at the current address in the Kerkstraat. in 1897 the name changed to Boelens-De Meester. Brewing stopped during World WarI, after the war the family continued the business as a bottling and beer enterprise. In 1978 Kris Boelens took over the beer business from his father. He reintroduced beer brewing in Belsele in 1993. In 2016 his son Yannick Boelens joined the brewery.

Bottle from nutjes. Many thanks! GUSHER! Hazy colour, white foam. Nose of peat, smoke, vinegar. Taste is very sour infected with notes of bandaid, medicine, varnish. Infected and very bad. A shame this is being sold in shops.

Bottle shared (warning- started leaking before opening and when it was opened let out a lot of pressure. Surprised the bottle didn’t explode). Very hazy dull dark golden with an off white head. Aroma of malt, grain, herbs and light fruits. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Light medium bodied with soft carbonation. [13-07-2016]

The guys from SDP in Sint-Niklaas already commissioned a tripel from Boelens last year - with only minor differences with Boelens’ own Tripel Klok - and with ’hop forward’ being trendy in 21st-century Belgium, it comes as no big surprise that this ’tripel hop’ version has now joined it. Not dubbed ’tripel hop’ though, so the number of hop varieties used remains unclear. Thinly cobweb-lacing, snow white, moussy head with good ’edge retention’ and thin patches of foam remaining in the middle; clear warm ’old gold’ colour with somewhat salmon pinkish hue and minute bits of yeast here and there, getting more numerous as the bottle progresses, eventually becoming a deeper ’dirty’ orange with a sediment of darker yeast bits at the bottom. Aroma of dry hay, dried apricot, field flowers, bread crust, straw, peach, toast, old ’jenever’, old paper, turnip, light green banana, unripe gooseberry, very old dry curry powder, earthy potato peel, white pepper. Crisp, fruity onset, the typical Belgian hints at gooseberry and peach, but low in banana ester, sweetish and sourish, spritzy carbo but actually fitting in well for a beer like this. Some spicy phenols dastardly creep up from behind and accompany the fruity esters over a middle phase of pleasantly bready, slightly caramelly malts, sweetish, but countered with bitterness at the right moment, when an earthy, spicy, floral, herbal hoppiness penetrates the whole, leaving behind a resinous, drying bitterness and lovely floral old ’noble’ hop aromas retronasally, along with a late but effective glow of warming, ’jenever’-like alcohol. I’ve seen more than one attempt at ’hopping up’ a tripel just because it is trendy in Belgium these days, but this one, I think, does it just about right; the regular tripel is decent enough, but this extra dosis of firm, proud, old European hops makes it a lot better - at least to hopheads. Sure, it remains very Belgian in its earthiness, yeastiness and phenols, but in that particular segment which should be categorized separately as "Belgian IPA", this is a very decent one in my book.

Trevlig.

Hazy medium golden colour, average frothy white head, mostly diminishing, light lacing. Aroma yeast, fruity (orange, melon), grain, light honey. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, fruity, spicy. Bit harsh dry bitter and husky finish, medium body, oily to creamy texture, soft carbonation. Mixed feelings because of the harsh finish.

"Borsbeeks blond bier" made for the municipality of Borsbeek near Antwerp. Slow gusher but manageable. Initially very thick, frothy, dense, egg-white head, slowly decreasing in size but remaining stable and leaving thick patches of lacing on the edge of the glass, sustained by strong fizz in a lightly hazy, ’old gold’ coloured beer, becoming misty and more ochre-ish with sediment. Aroma of pineapple, green banana, orange peel, white pepper, dried grass, baker’s yeast, chicory, gooseberry, white bread dough, apple peel. Fizzy, fruity onset, hints of green banana, raw pineapple and unripe stonefruit, vaguely sweetish and softly sourish with hints of bitterness present from the start, sharply carbonated but that does not bother me too much in this particular style which, after all, originated as a top-fermented alternative to pale lager. Lean, supple pale malt sweetishness in the middle with a pleasant bready touch to it, which further increases in the finish due to the yeast, paired with a growing and eventually relatively firm, earthy, chicory- and wormwood-like hop bitterness which nicely dries the ending and lingers for a while. Technically as good as correct, a tad overcarbonated perhaps, but more hop bitter than average for a Belgian blonde and actually quite balanced and enjoyable. Cliché, but I expected worse.
