Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

15CL glass at Zythos Beer Festival. Hoppy aroma, and a decent taste that I expect from an IPA, decent beer.

Bottle sample @ ZBF’13 shared with the RB Belgian crew.

Small rim; but nice lacerings over copper-amber beer. Another rude EU-hops beer, bit of caramel, bit of raisins aromas. Hoppy flavour, mix of noble and other hops, but very severe, nearly tannine-like. Hopoils abundant. Quite slick, hopoily feel, well-carbonated. Not bad, but indistinctive.

33 cl. bottle sampled @ ZBF 2013. “No hops, no glory.” Clear amber with a white head. Sweet caramel in the nose, iron, grapefruit & citrus, lightly USA hoppy,… Taste is light grapefruit, balanced sweetness, caramel, toffee, hay, light herbs, grass, flowers,… Too restrained & meek now for an IPA it feels & this was released just 1 day ago when I tried it.

330ml bottle @ HBF 2013
Pours dark brown with a foamy head. Aroma of sweet syrupy malts, toffee, caramel and hints of perfume. Taste is sweet, malty and fruity with hints of perfume and floral hops. Finish is malty and syrupy. A bit unbalanced and too boozy and perfumy.
