Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Clear pale blond beer, big creamy irregular white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: very rural, grains, hay, cow stable, cow fodder, something dirty, manure, meh. Don’t like it very much. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: very malty, grains, some caramel, little fruity, ripe banana, bit sugary, then that same nasty stuff as in the aroma, very unpleasant, really don’t like it. What has been added to this beer? Aftertaste: overripe to rotten banana, cow fodder, sugary touch, some toothpaste, where’s that matcha? Or something went really wrong with that matcha and transformed this beer to something pretty bad.

Bottle from Carrefour. Pours clear golden with a lasting, thick, frothy, white head. Aroma of unripe banana, yellow apple, grass, breadcrust, white pepper. Taste has sweet plain maltiness, bread, apple & pear accentuated by bitter straw & spices. Grassy hoppy finish, a bit spicy, low esters but they're there. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Easy drinker, that's about it.

Witbier spiced with dried orange peel, coriander seed and pink pepper, developed by a hobby brewer in Beernem (and a tribute to his grandmother apparently); commercial batches brewed by Vliegende Paard, for now at least. Thanks to tderoeck. Egg-white, thick and dense, large-bubbled yet stable head on an initially clear, deep yellow-glowing golden beer, turning a deeper misty apricot blonde with sediment. Aroma of dried out lemon zest, dried basil, white bread, banana peel, raw potato, unripe peach, paprika powder (the pink pepper I guess), coriander seed. Sweetish and sourish, spritzy onset with banana, peach and green pear fruitiness, but the actual flavour is marred a bit by very sharply stinging overcarbonation even for this style; soft white-bready malt body with a very vague metallic edge to it, flavoured with a mild floral hop touch and – much more so – coriander seed, dried citrus peel (though not so much that it is recognizable as orange) and the pink pepper, which actually overpowers the rest in a dried basil-like way. Spicy wheat blonde rather than a traditional witbier, a bit distinct indeed and certainly not unpleasant, but drinkability here – an important aspect of witbier and its relatives – is hampered a bit by that sharp overcarbonation.

Bottle from Carrefour. Pours hazy amber/copper with a big, stable, foamy, off-white head. Aroma of sour cherry, mocha, green tea, plum, cake, red apple. Taste has sweet-sour cherry, plum, raisin, metallic & herbal tea-like accent, vague coffee ground, bit bready malty. Herbal hoppy finish, tart, more cherry, tea leaves & coffee bean. Medium body, creamy texture, fizzy carbonation. Underwhelming.
