Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

10 August 2019. At Belgian Beer Geek Tasting. Cheers to the crew, thanks for hosting, Tim! Hazy dark brown to black with a very thin, frothy, tan head. Aroma of prune, raisin, ruby port, wood, liqueur-filled chocolates, vanilla, mocha. Taste is medium fruity sweet, lots of dried fruits with prune, raisin & dates, subtle chocolatey base with a touch of vanilla; a bit bitter, woody, black tea-like. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, more wood & dark fruits with a good dash of warming port-like alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Rather restrained in its roasted 'Stoutness' but the abundant dark fruitiness compensates for that.

2014 bottle. Big dubbel type aroma, beefy, bit of choc, ovaltine maltiness. And booze. Taste is more full on, bit of booze, dark fruit, quite dry but with a rich body. Nice but bit full on. Caramel and treacle with a boozy kick

Bottle at Delices. Fake Xmas! Blond, soft, almost British in feel. Light hops, malty, dough like. Bit of sweetness. Good stuff, but surprising on many levels.

Bottle. Dark red/brown colour with small creamy thick head. Aroma is chocolate, ginger spicy, boozy and roasty. Taste is similar, lots of boozy sweetness, roasty, brown sugar. Booze is there but not ultra in your face. Fruity too, raisins. Nice. Quite thick and smooth. It's pretty nice but something not quite there.

Bottle. Dark brown color. Butterscotch in the almost vinous aroma. Malty sweet, alcoholic flavor with brandy notes. Somewhat perfumed. Grapes. Decent.
