Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

I have a 37.5 cl bottle that came from a friendly Belgian retailer very early in the year, just now getting it out to try. For this event I am using the Trappistes Rochefort glass, my favorite for quadrupels. The arrival is a cola-colored liquid with a creamy head of sepia foam that departs promptly. The scent is full of ripe, dark fruit, some grain and a bit of booziness. The taste is good, but a distance from the best in the style. Figs, baked bread, a hint of caramel, raisins and straw. The alcohol is apparent, as is a bit of bitterness at the finish.

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a deep amber colour with a large foamy off white head. Aromas of caramel, toasty bread, tea and a hint of nuts. Taste is bitter with more notes of caramel, toasty bread and tea with some herbal notes, peppery spice and a hint of nuts. Big bitterness throughout that lingers on the finish. Medium body with fairly low carbonation. Decent but a little too bitter for me personally.

On tap at Bier Palais Brugge. Cloudy gold colour thick white head. Diacetyl. Wow ages since I had diacetyl so strong. Settles down. Not much of a wheat beer. Some tropical melon and pineapple modern hops. Yikes. Don't like yeast hops ot diacetyl .

Smell- weak malt, weak hops, tea. Foam- thin, malt, weak hops, faint bitter tones, faint herbal tones. Head is large, white-brown in color. Sticks. Appearance- interesting label, but generic bottle cap. Clear orange-amber in color, high in carbonation. From - pint Taster - malt, weak herbal tones, weak hops, weak bitterness, some gasoline in the back and faint alcohol tones. Interesting, I guess its tea-infused so I am getting that. Interesting little experiment, but nothing special so I would return.

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a hazy light golden colour with a large fluffy white head. Aromas of toasted grains, hay and floral. Taste is again toasted grains, hay, floral and a grassy bitterness on the dry finish. Medium body with fairly low carbonation. Not a typical Belgian Blond style beer but more like a German Pilsner. Decent enough but a different sort of Belgian beer.

Large foamy white head on a finely carbonated amber coloured body. Malt, spicy, fruity & tea aroma. Medium bodied, foamy & cloying. Spicy, hoppy, malt, tea & biscuit tastes with a tangy finish. Tastes like an EIPA.
