Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Donkerbruin bier met heel veel schuim wat lang blijft staan. Smaak is licht bitter met overduidelijk een rook smaak en iets van BBQ.

Aroma of plum, raisin, red apple, toffee, wood, brioche, sugared green tea, pepper, brown rum. Taste has sweet plum, raisin, pear & apple in a toffee-malty, syrupy body with herbal notes. Herbal & peppery hoppy finish, light woody tannins in a 'wet' way, lingering dried fruit, syrup and expected rum-like alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Bottle split at the Autumn Watford tasting, thanks to Leighton, 24/09/21. Deep chestnut brown with a fast collapsing beige covering. Nose is dusty fruits, wood must, cocoa sprinkle, light bourbon soak. Taste comprises stewed fruits, toffee, damp wood, raisins, dried fruits, light bourbon buzz. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close with a kiss of alcohol. Pleasant enough sipper for its age.

Bottle shared in Watford - picked up from Etre, I think. Pours clear copper with a very slight, bubbly tan head. Medium sweet flavour, some brown sugar, brown bread, a little toffee, nips of earth, oak, booze. Medium to full bodied, totally flat. Warm-hot finish, more toasted sugars, subtle bourbon, mild leafy bitterness, toffee. Not bad.
