Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Aroma of malts, caramel, toffee, raisins, fudge, plum, chocolate, sweet dark fruits. Flavour is malty caramel, toffee, pretty sweet. A decent Quad, could be a bit fuller.

Aroma of citrus, lemon, hops, herbs. Flavour is citrussy and herbal, with a decent bitterness in the aftertaste. Not a fan of the style, but I like this one.

Aroma of dark malt, caramel, dark dried fruits, roasted coffee. Flavour is dried fruits, medium sweet, with a good lasting coffee bitterness in the aftertaste. Most of the coffee is in the finish. Definitely enjoyable, though I had hoped for a stronger coffee flavour.

2014 bottle. Aroma of malt, peat, charred wood, whiskey. Flavour is medium sweet with a moderate bitter finish. Quite peaty, but the rich sweetness adds some balance. Enjoyable.

Bottle at home. Aroma is light malt, fruits, some grapefruit, grass, yeast, some perfume, hint of citrus, some herbal and hoppy notes. Flavour is moderate to medium bitter. Body is medium. Surprisingly refreshing and hoppy Belgian Ale, I like this.

Bottle from Biernavigatie. Aroma is strong herbal tea, soft smoke, mild citrus, malt, light grassy hops. Flavour is light to moderate sweet and above moderate bitter. Medium bodied. Nice Lapsang Souchong/beer hybrid, but you have to enjoy the tea to enjoy this one.

Bottle from bierhandelwillems, I want to get this rating in before I cannot. Snifter in use tonight. The body is chocolate brown covered with a super thin skim of tawny tan foam. The smell compares to a glass of your finest scotch. And the drink, well, heavy with the whisky and also oak, a bit of subdued figs, dark bread and earth. Not your normal quadrupel but I can appreciate.

I have a lightly cooled 37.5 ml bottle. Tonight my glass is the Delirium tulip glass, cap is lifted and I pour. The appearance is a shiny, dark brown body finished by a smattering of light tan foam. The nose is a sweet smell with caramel, grain and barrel. Time for a drink. Dried fruit, bread, alcohol, sweet vanilla, whiskey and dark plums. The sum is greater than the parts.
