Bottle. #208/240. Rich amber beer with a thin light beige head. Bourbon notes in aroma - strawberry, sweet malt, and alcohol. Strng bourbon flavor with some vanilla and oak. Some fruit. Noticable alcohol. The bourbon just overpowers everything and is way too much in your face. There’s a good beer underneath, but its being hidden by the bourbon. Tasted in a side-by-side comparison with the regular Numbskull, and this one tasted more of alcohol and had much less complexity.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a thin light beige head. Malt aroma - lots of sweet malt - with a bit of fruitiness. Lots of raisin and malt in the flavor - some hop bitterness peaking through. Some alcohol present. Rich, silky body.

Cloudy, reddish copper pour with fizzy, short-lived head - no lacing - very full aroma, with caramel, flowery hops, herbs, dark fruit, alcohol (perhaps a bit too much, though) - flavorful, but not overpowering - oily mouthfeel - fruity esters and thick caramel malt flavors up front, making way for honey, brown sugar, perhaps some ginger - finishes with hops and warming alcohol - quite a nice barleywine, but there are many better.

A hazy amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of alcohol and lots of fruit, leaning towards the over ripe end of life. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel, prunes, over ripe fruits, wood, and alcohol, that prickles the tongue. The end is dry and woody.

2005 bomber consumed on 12/3/05 and 12/4/05. I also had a bottle of it about 4 months ago, but I didnt want to review that one as it was almost syrupy and quite resinous/pine sappy. Even the 4 months of aging in my refridgerator has helped mellow this one out. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well malted, but it was just too syrupy and sweet with too much acid when fresh. Pours a deep, golden-amber, kind of a canteloupe melon color, though quite brilliant with plenty of bottle conditioned bubbles creating a dense and creamy large off-white head that is retained at cover and laces lightly. Aroma has tons of grapefruit, pine resin and plenty of floral, green hop freshness. Light juicy fruits apparent as well. Hints of honey and caramel in the background create a well-balanced and highly aromatic aroma. Flavor begins with plenty of pine resin, oranges, toasted malt notes, and a sweet caramel-chocolate note. Kind of like the orange flavored chocolate I had for breakfast. Herbs and leafy green hops, with a high amount of bitterness. Spectacular mouthfeel, creamy through and through, with tight carbonation and a chewy substantiality to the body. Alcohol is not apparent. High amount of yeast drying on the very end (end of bottle) and a moderate amount of acidity lingers on the palate, but so does plenty of citric hop flavor and light melanoidins. While not significanly unique from many other West Coast IPAs, the mouthfeel is perfectly executed.

This is a wonderful after-dinner stout made for sipping. Appealing opaque black pour with minimal tan head. Aroma of coffee and roasted malts as you’d expect. The flavor is thick with coffee, roasted and burnt malts with a hint of licorice and a slight hint of caramel all balanced with a bitterness at the end. But the highlight is the palate. Full body and velvet smooth on the downpour. The alcohol is not overpowering, but does warm you.

Bottle at London Gathering Nov 05. As per usual Silk was completely wrong on this beer (although he was correct with the Cantillon Cognac and the Lyme Bay mead). Maeib and I both enjoyed this. Hazy russet colour with beige head. Big US hop aroma. Lime and grapefruit. Pretty good actually. Nothing too distinguished with it, some good malt, but it ticks all the right boxes. Kept going back to it throughout the evening.

Small yellow-brown head; darker brown beer with Burgundy highlights. Smoked, nearly tarred nose, and some roasted malts. Toasted bread with butter, and Islay malt aromas. Smoked toasty taste, sweet and a bit caramelly, but in a nice, not cloying way. Apricot flavour retronasal. Smooth, slick, even viscous, much more than expected from a Scotch ale. Great, even when some unusual characteristics; good catch whoever brought it.

Dark red-brown beer, with huge, brownish, beaten eggwhite-like head. Dry and spicey, liqueurish nose, like a spiced liqueur from some very obscure and sophisticated monks. Alcohol already in the nose. Sweet, and again spicey taste, cloves, nutmeg; fruity notes, bits of citrus and dark fruit. Malts obvious. Very well bodied, slick MF. Dry finish, again quite liqueurish, alcohol. Quite unusual, nice and spicey. My best beer from Alesmith so far. Great catch, Tim.

Bottle at the RBG Low Countries 2005 tasting session
Off-white, clear brown-black body. Nose of straw, molasses, coffee, liquor. Lightly sweet, moderately bitter initial flavour. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter (long) finish. Medium bodied. Soft carbonation. The 9.5% ABV isn’t apparent at all. Very smooth beer and well-balanced. Not a flavour-bomb, which I like in it.
