Description

Bottle. Aroma of burnt plastic. Almost clear golden colour. OK stable white head. The flavour is not good. Lots of burnt plastic. Some raw liquorice, slightly spicy. Not a full-blown plastic beer, but not good either.

It looks like a clear copper coloured brew with a small but persistent head of foam, usual good lacing from a Belgian beer.

The smell, well, it’s very similar to an aged UK Old or Barley Wine. Lots of caramel malt more than hinting notes of Port. Aged Thomas Hardy or JR Lee’s, anyone?

The taste just verifies what I said about the smell, to the letter.

Very nice mouthfeel with lightish carbonation to with the medium body

It drinks like a champion of an Old Ale/Barleywine. I have to get more.

Somewhat special witbier, at least bolder than the Hoegaarden standard, with fresh orange peel used and dominating the nose, very refreshing, fluffy and soft mouthfeel, wheat sourishness, lots of citrus again but not over the top, coriander as usual, very thirst-quenching. Has more body than I’m used to from the style. Very good example, firm and characterful.

Bottle courtesy of Kermis. Poured a hazy medium amber with a thin broken white head. The aroma is Ovaltine malt. The flavour is light veggie acid mineral with a similar palate. Light bodied with average carbonation.

I popped the cap and there’s a slow oozing of the beer.

For an imperial Stout, it has more of a colour of a barley wine. A murky rust. The foam does a good job of shrinking from the initial pour leaving lots of lacing in its wake.

It smells like an aged barley wine. Caramel malt with a very noticeable Port like aroma. Marvelous.

The taste holds no surprises. Rich malty goodness with the Port flavourful I mentioned in the smell. I notice some oxidation which probably explains the Port.

Very nice and smooth mouth feel.

I guess I am digging this more than most, judging from the reviews. Oh well.

Pumpkin ale tasted as ’t Smisje Halloween, with a light yellowish white, regular, medium thick, unstable head and deep orange blonde colour, hazy but milky with deposit. Sweetly perfumed aroma, honey, white port wine, white candi sugar, caramel, rhum, orange, mint, pumpkin soup, aniseed. Sweetish peachy and citrussy onset, smooth and somewhat oily mouthfeel, caramelly malts, becoming more sweet afterwards and even a bit cloying, honeyish and brown rhum-like, soft pumpkin presence, spicy and yeasty finish with light floral hop bitterness as well as warming, even somewhat astringent alcohol; this was a bit too sweet and too alcoholic to my taste, but still another interesting Smisje.

Oak-aged spice ale with unstable, off-white head and a very fruity and rich aroma of peach, plum, woody tannins, single malt, coriander seed, brandy and madera; complex, fruity taste, sweetish with vivid spicy hints, drying coriander, smooth with a warming, woody, long and complex finish.

This was one of the former Regenboog beers and the first Belgian impy after Alvinne’s Podge. Very thick and rocky, sticky, light beige head, very dark and cloudy chocolate brown colour, not entirely black as one would expect from the style. Powerful and rich aroma of chocolate, pear, coffee grounds, yoghurt, raisins, lavender, port wine, parsley, candi syrup. Soft sweetish palate, candied fruits, mellow and fluffy mouthfeel, deep chocolatey maltiness, mouth-filling coffee-like bitterness in the end with a sourish touch for balance, long. Atypical, more a roasted Belgian ale than a real imperial stout, but a great beer nevertheless.
