Description
The Rodenbach family established the brewery in 1821 in the West Flemish town of Roeselare. The beer owes it unique quality and masterful character to the oak casks in which it matures. Rodenbach is the archetypical Flemish red-brown ale from West Flanders. Recognised as a regional product, it is probably the most award-winning beer in the world.

Dark brown-red, hazy, brown-yellow head, creamy. Sourish nose, vinous, oakwood, shrubbery, lactic-acetic. Sweet taste, creamy, lactic, slightly sourish. Bitterish retronasal component from first PALM-tries seems gone. Refreshing acidity - medium bodied. Long lingering acid aftertaste. I have not seen the bottle. Is this an old one (I doubt that), or is PALM reverting to the old taste? Good!

Thanks to MOboy for sending me a couple bottles of this from his stash. Pours a ruddy dark amber with a medium thin light tan head. Thin lacing. Aroma is just waiting to burst like a mob of Saturday morning shoppers waiting at the doors for a store to open during a big sale. Strong sherry, citrus, apple and grapes almost overwhelm. Unfortunately my first impression of the flavor reminded me of a cheap screw-top wine like Boone's. Sour and fruity with a light effervescent character. I am glad I got to try it as this is an interesting and complex beer, but honestly I don't think I would get it again if I had the chance.

Second time around - I liked this a lot better. ----------- A deep red beer with light brown head that disappears fast. The aroma is very fruity with notes of cherry, kriek, tree and acid. The flavor is acidic sweet because of the mixed fermentation. It has a very powerful start, then a bit watery in the middle and ends with a sharp typical gueze aftertaste.

Lactic sourness and notes like fermenting grass (in a good way). Deep red, head did not last long for me. Refreshing sourness, which cleans the palate wonderfully. Tastenotes of srawberries and apples. Leaves a nice tingle on the tounge, which i wish would last longer.

Fruity srawberry aroma. Redwine-colored, the head was gone quickly. Malty/walnut notes, yet fruity in front of a nice sour background. The palate fills out the entire mouth and you sit back with a aftertaste like from a dry white wine.

Red, though very dark colour. Light sweet aroma. Little bit sweet, but especially sour flavour, maybe I got a bad bottle, but this rating is way out of the standarddeviation. Very weird.

Clear ruby color. Fruity sour aroma. Some cherries, bit sweet taste. Sour but refreshing palate. Although the flanders red ales and the lambics are not my style, i think i learn to appreciate them more every time.

Quite funny. My first encounter with the Rodenbach was also my first experience with a flemish red. I can remember i wasn't quite known with the more sour belgian styles, and this style in particular was overcherried in my opinion. But as my tastebuds have evolved throughout my presence on ratebeer, i can appreciate more and more different styles. So also, the flemish sour ales. There you go: a 4.0! Original Rate:Although i admire the perhaps greatness of this beer, i just cant appreciate fruitbeers, and this one does remind me of a simple Kriek, with it's enormous cherry taste. It's very fruity and that's the thing which f*cks up the flavour! Beer is made of hops and granes and not of fruit!
