Cask at Back of Beyond, Reading. Dark brown with a middling creamy head. A little melon and grapefruit up front then bitter pine kicks in. Chocolate and cola come through but overall it’s maybe a little too bitter to allow the full flavour of the hops to shine through. Not bad though.

Cask at the Victoria Station Spoons - London. Pours dark, caramel-brown with a thick, fluffy khaki head. The nose receives dark toasted bread, burnt leaves, slight pine. Light-medium sweet flavor with decent roasted malt character, some oily pine, nips of cocoa. Medium bodied with fine carbonation; nicely conditioned. Lightly resinous on the finish with more well-toasted brown bread, earth, dirty pine, cocoa. Not a bad mid-level CDA.

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a clear dark brown with a bubbly off-white head. The aroma is light malt. The flavour is light bitter with a hop liqourice bitter light spice palate and a long bitter finish. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation. Not a lot going on. The pump clip is more attractive than the beer. Chocolate and coffee? Really didn’t get that at all.

Boittle from Waitrose. Clear ruby body with a thin white head. Light carbonation. Faint lacing. Weak aroma of stewed tea. Flavour of bread, biscuit, tea and a light fruity note. Thin body with a watery, slightly oily texture. Soft fizz. No real depth of flavour but very drinkable.

Cask at Westow House. It pours darkest ruby with a medium tan head. The nose is roasted malt, toast, chocolate, varnish, treacle, dark fruits and jammy berry. The taste is rich, roasted malt, peppery, pine, varnish, bold bitterness, cola cubes, dark fruit, Dandelion & Burdock, resin, twiglets, treacle and cocoa with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Quite intense, rich and bitter. Really good depth of flavour. A great cask Black IPA.

0.5l bottle. This is a clear light amber red colored one with a nice big bubbly off-white top. Mild aromas. I only get some malty sweet fruity nuances and a little bit of red apple zest. Mild but not bad at all. Tastes quite nice. Feels quite thin and almost what you could call watery in the mouth while the carbonation level is about average and small bubbled. Mild fruity flavors. It has a nice green bitterness but it's also well malty. Nuts are also present in this. Well crafted. Would not mild drinking this again. 21.12.2013
