Description
The “Struise” concept is based on creativity, innovation, quality, sustainability and friendship. We started developing beers anno 2001, at a holiday resort in the village of Lo-Reninge, in a small barn at an ostrich farm called “De Noordhoek”. The first beer we ever developed there, was an Old Style wheat-beer, called “Struise Witte”. The name “Struise” is taken from Flemish slang for ostrich. Our brewery coat of arms takes it a step further and features a proud ostrich amongst knight’s helmet, shield and feathers.
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

22 November 2025. GBV Tasting: Struise en kaas feat. Tim DR (Jan Yoens). Cheers to the whole crew!

Clear golden, thin, off-white head. Aroma of green apple, rhubarb, sorrel, hay, barnyard, sourdough, oak. Taste has sour green apple & sorrel in a sourdough-like, bread-crusty malt base with lactic acid and funky hay notes. Old grassy hops in the finish, lingering green apple & oak. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Solid Sour Ale with spicy notes; complex yet restrained; more than anything, a striking reminder of what Struise was capable of.

Hazy dark brown, stable, foamy, off-white head. Aroma of ripe grape, dried banana, candied plum, wood, vanilla, old milk chocolate, apple peel, brown sugar. Taste has sweet raisin, banana & grape in a brown-sugary, brioche- & toffee-like malt body. Long fruity finish offering notes of wood, vanilla (bourbon!), candied cherry and vague herbal hops; a dash of warming port-like alcohol. Medium to full body, oily, bit sticky texture, soft carbonation. Very elegant and deliciously fruity.

22 November 2025. GBV Tasting: Struise en kaas feat. Tim DR (Jan Yoens). Cheers to the whole crew!

Hazy dark brown-black, stable, thin, tan head. Expressive aroma of malt vinegar, fermenting cherries, brambleberry, nectarine, leather, pralines, fruit liqueur, almond, tobacco (indeed, Tim!), vague diacetyl, port wine. Taste has sweetish ripe brambleberry & cherry going over funky & sourish notes of yoghurt, malt vinegar and leather, kept together by a milk-chocolatey, almondy malt body. Tart finish of dried dark fruits, woody tannins and warming port-like alcohol. Medium to full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Has definitely 'mellowed' over the years but not lost any complexity. This is excellent!

Lateste version in a 33cl bottle. Pralines, chocolate sauce, espresso, teriyaki, bourbon, black olive, beef jerky, cigar tobacco. Taste has sweet prune & brambleberry, fondant maltiness, bitter espresso, umami teriyaki. Earthy hops, a bit solventy buit countered again by the roasted maltiness. Quite boozy whisky-like alcohol. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Slightly subtler than the Double Black, but let's see what some ageing can do with this.

Bottle from Bow Street Beverage, Portland, ME, drunk 11/16/25. As pictured.
Strong Scotch nose but not domineering. Spice, pepper, caramel and chocolate with light vanilla and oak. Nice balance. Easygoing at this point with no alcohol or any sharpness anywhere.
I think, had I not just had Froggie a few days ago, this would have nearly blown me away, but it pales in comparison to Froggie from the same vintage. Yet still lovely, with no aggressive anything and a good integration of peat and Scotch and oak. Tending dry at this point, but far from thin, with a slightly chewy at points body. No oxidation, no alcohol. Its past its peak but it's not very tired yet.

3 year old 11.2oz bottle. A pinch oxidized. Sweet, heavy, rich...of course. Thick chocolate fudge, the Belgian yeast gives it fruity depth, almost a port like undertone. Even with that, a little bit one note, too big for its own good. Still enjoyable.

Bourbon barrel aged. Really great beer. Carbonation has mellowed out some, but not flat by any means. A lot of depth and interplay between the malts, yeast, barrel. Delightful stuff.
