Description

I really enjoy visiting Achel Abbey, so when last year, on a rainy but sunny summer day, the bartender let us know they had changed the recipe of their two patersbieren and pumped them up to 7%, I was really eager to try them. I must say the beers have got better with the change and, also, the blond one is now superb; magnificent! Among the ranks of the greatest ever. So go there, try it and judge. Here's my tasting: It pours hazy golden with an ephemerous white head ("ephemerous", pedantic for short lived). Aroma is lemon, coriander, pineapple, lawn, ginger... varied, fragrant, and intense. Taste is dry and powerful, perfectly assembled, lively and displaying a surprisingly (for a Trappist ale) bitter finish. I'll definetely try to drink it again.

Bottle at Cambrinus, Bruges, 21/01/18. Rich chestnut brown with a decent light beige cap that dissipates to a swirl. Nose is malt forward, light spice, caramel, sticky toffee pudding, brown sugar melt. Taste comprises sweet malts, caramel, bread pudding, dates, fruit loaf, dried fruits, slight tangy edge. Medium plus body, fine to prickly carbonation, semi drying close. Decent Belgo strong ... holds the ABV well.

11.2 ounce bottle, best before August 17th, 2018.
Pours a fairly clear gold, initially large head of foam, shrinking slowly, not much lacing.
Smells spicy, hoppy, notes of coriander, pepper, light grass, picking up some fruit, sweet malt
Spicy taste up front, from the hops and yeast. Coriander and very much the pepper. Malt is semi sweet, earthy, adding much delicious flavour. A spicier Tripel than say, the Chimay but equally acceptable and enjoyable.

0,33 l bottle. Pours golden yellow with a finger of quickly dissipating white head until only a veil remains. Aroma of bread, yeast, light honey, some citrus and herbal hop aroma. Taste is medium sweet, light to medium bitter. Body is full, texture creamy and carbonation lively. Finish is long, initial sweetness is slowly overrun by earthy, herbal, spicy bitterness.

Fles gedeeld met LiekevdV. Het is een lichtbruin bier met weinig schuim. Het aroma is een beetje moutig. De smaak is moutig en licht gebrand.

(bottle, 75cl) Hazy, pale golden colour with a big and blond foamy head. Yeasty, malty aroma with notes of cereals, bread, honey and flowery hops. Moderately sweet flavour, full bodied with a modest carbonation. Grainy malt character with Belgian yeasty spice, white bread, a touch of honey and flowery hops towards the finish, getting slightly grassy at the very end. Decent. 26.XII.17

Bouteille: Golden, hazy, big and stable beaten-egg-white-like head, solid nose of grains, honey and yeast with shy herbal hops in the background; solid sweet flavour with a delicate bitterness, full bodied and astonishingly soft; slightly lingering - a bit boozy - sweet malty finish with a delicate hoppy note. Good, but not great...
