Draught at George Hotel, Inverary. Pours amber with a red hue and some head. The nose has a very gentle hint of toffee and cream. The taste gentle notes again - toffee and hay this time. The palate is light bodied and textured and there is a clean-ish finish. Overall, light and sessionable.

Draught at Melfort. Pours a dark amber with a small head and some bubbles. The nose has toffee and malt. The taste has more malt, more toffee and then an astringent malt note on the end. The palate is light to medium in body and structure and texture but with an astringent malt finish. Overall, I won’t be having another.

On tap at Ryries. Pours golden amber with loads of bubbles and a small head which does stay around. The nose has pale malt and not much else, to be honest. The taste has malt, then nothing else, just a malt note that gets more horrible all the way to the end. Oh yes, there’s a metallic note. The palate is light in structure and texture but at least it is fairly clean. Overall, it’s pretty bad but if you’re going to drink pissy lager, at least drink your local one.

440 ml can, as Wellpark Tennent’s, brewed at Wellpark Brewery, Glasgow. Bought in Spain. ABV is 4.0%. "Lager" is not part of the beer’s name, but I assume this is just a slightly weaker version of the ordinary Tennent’s Lager. Golden colour, moderate white head, some lacing. Weak sweetish and "industrial" aroma. Fairly refreshing flavour, tolerable hops, and not quite as thin as feared from a 4.0% lager.

Poured from a 500ml yellow can that I bought at a local store in Edinburgh. Airy, beige head that fades away after a short while. Ruby brown – deep and clear. Wort-like malts to the nose. Notes of diluted wheaty malts in flavour. Just about drinkable (hotel room, 02.12.2010).

Can. Very dark brown. Big head. Smells vaguely stouty. Very sweet. It has malta-like malt extract sweetness with only the faintest roast accent that barely makes an impact. Not the most characterful sweet stout I’ve ever had, but an old-timey classic I couldn’t pass up the chance to try.

50cl Can, bought at a Tesco in Edinburgh, Scotland. Clear golden colour, white head. Aroma of light malts, straw, faint hops. Flavour is light sweet, light malty, straw, light bittersweet finish. Light bodied. This isn’t bad, just plain tasteless.

Draught. Slightly sour barley malt and light herbal hops aroma. Chestnut color with small head. Slightly sweet barley malt and light lemon grass hops flavor. Nice but not outstanding.
