Pours dark brown with tan head. Dark fruit and caramel aromas. Very sweet flavor of raisins, figs and coffee. 12% ABV is barely noticeable. Medium body with a syrupy mouthfeel, moderate carbonation and a bitter finish.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy orange-bronze color with gobs of carbonation. Medium head wioth fair head retention and lacing. Aroma is very nutty with some toffee notes. Slight grain and resin notes as well. Taste is bitter hops with a grainy malt finish. Medium bodied. Drinkable but I’m not a fan of this one at all.

12 oz bottle. Starts with a good hoppy smell when I open; that can put me in a favorable mood. Label calls it a brown beer, and it is more brown than a pale ale. Slight scrum of bubbles on top with a bit of lacing power. Light malts, just a bit of fruitiness, not too sweet. But a big load of hop alphas. No citrus or pine, but an abundance of American bittering hops. Frankly, a bit of a change from the usual hop-head brews. I was prepared to dismiss this as another contract-brewed gimmick beer, but it is actually different.

Weak fig aroma. Hazy dingy brown, no head. Sufficiently malty, yeasty, with undertones of dates. Good balance. Fantastic lemongrass and bark finish, with hints of the elusive cilantro. Don’t let looks fool ya, this is a good beer. No nuttiness that would be expected from an ABA and too hoppy to be an EBA, but a delightfull drink.

On tap at The Rake, HogTownHarry visit May 2009. Very deep brown, almost black, thin tan head. Sweetish aroma Pretty good malt, nice bit of roasty toasty notes. I quite like it. It’s boozy, but fine, took me a bit of time to finish even a third of a pint.

Bottle, Utobeer, London. Definite extra marks for paying homage to one of the comedy greats. Poured a very dark amber colour. Aroma was fruity and boozy with a whole load of hops..Sweetish flavour with a peppery slant with yet more bitter hops and a bit of citrus; alcohol evident and noticable, caramel malt and rye too. Quite a complex drop this. Finished drying. I think LB would have approved; as in the words of the great man.... The "what should be" never did exist, but people keep trying to live up to it. There is no "what should be," there is only what is.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a large brown head. The aroma was malty and sweet with notes of chocolate and candied dark fruits. The flavor was full with molasses, caramel and candied dark fruits. Touches of bourbon, port wine and cocoa mix through into a long and complex finish. The mouthfeel was very thick and full. Excellent.
