Draft at the Bistro’s West Coast BA Fest, 11/10/07;Nose of Butter (diacetyl) with some caramel, no hops; Hazy rust with a small ring of beige bubbles; flavor was bourbon and buttery popcorn; absolutely gross! They did something wrong brewing this batch.

Pours an orange body with a reasonably thick head. Hop aroma, along with fruits. It wasn’t that hoppy really, but it was hoppy enough. I didn’t sense any of the rye there. Alcohol taste covered up by complex flavour. I enjoyed it.

Re-rate: 12oz bottle out of Vertical Jewbalation gift pack. The recipes have all been recreated this time around and I sat down to sample all of them. This beer still reigns as the worst of the bunch. However, it was great to see the incremental formation of this beer making it hard to actually blame the brewer. The beers building up to this (Anniversary 8-10) were doing a decent job. Ignore the fact that having a mish-mash of different hops and malts is a silly basis for a beer, they all came off fine and getting better with each new year. But they reached a saturation point here. They tried to ferment this baby real well to pump up that abv and it ended up in an alcoholic mess, yet well attenuated. I like the idea but the results were not a winner. Afterward, the Anniversary brews all started to have a lot more sugar covering up the alcohol, a necessity for such a beer. The first time I had it I was very upset, second go around its not quiet as bad. I also did not get that really shitty leafy hop messiness, must have gotten a better crop of hops this time. 6/3/6/3/13, Final rating is a combination of the two.
I always look forward to the Hebrew’s anniversary releases and so far have not been disappointed. Every year they were able to make a similar yet different and more importantly, good beer. However, that tradition has finally come to an end. The beer smells like an alcoholic bitter-leaf mess. Taste is slightly less bad with too much bitter leaf hops and prune alcohol. Body is way too light and there is no malt backbone to the strong alcohol and massive amounts of hops. The only thing this beer has in common with its previous versions is its black body and the very entertaining label. Couldn’t drink too much of this, just one malt and one hoppy to much this year.5/3/6/2/11
22oz bottle, Rodenbach GC glass.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of over ripe fruits and caramel. The flavor is sweet mlaty with notes of alcohol and over ripe fruits, leading to a dry bitter finish.

Bomber pours very dark, actually opaque, in the tulip glass I’m using. It has an initial two inch light mocha colored head. Initially the aroma is light. All I get is a faint pale malt aroma and a hint of fruitiness. The flavor however created a “wow” response upon the initial taste. Yummy. The taste begins rich and malty with roasted malts, burnt malts and chocolate malts. Then it turns fruity with the yeasty esters of sweet dark grapes, raisins, dates, prunes and pepper. Then the ABV starts to become apparent toward the finish. Underneath the maltiness and fruity esters is a mild hop bitterness that runs the length of the length of the taste experience. This could really use more age before it really peaks. I have a nice tidy space in my cellar for some of this.
Opened my last bottle today (20170818). This has aged wonderfully the ten years it’s been in my closet. Dark roastiness with a layerof burnt malt, sweet toffee and then a faint sense of sweet fruity esters and a blunted medley of hops. Wow. The original rating was 3.9. This is far better than that now.

Amber colour, slightly hazy. Chewy, earthy, with lots of grapefruit and crystal malt. Extra chewy on the palate, resiny, crystal malt and more grapefruit. Balanced but for the lack of rye. Good brew, but not great.
