Description

Generation.

The bottle looks simple, but good, the beer in the glass copper-coloured, creamy head. Starts malty-smoky, not too much like bacon like other smoked beers, fine spicy. Finish also grasy with light lemon notes. Very well balanced, quite drinkable. Great beer!

Blanchard’s Liquor from a bet I won with my girlfriend 500ml ($6): Pours a copper body with a white head that leaves a thick lacing. Smoky grains aroma with a whole bunch of meat, like sausage and bacon bits. Smoky taste, moderate compared to more intense rauchbiers, but still there. Let’s the lager taste show through a bit more. Kind of like the Aecht Helles. Very smooth and pleasant mouthfeel. I kind of wish I got the bock or the marzen though.

bottle from Münchberg. Clear mahogany-brown colour, mid-iszed creamy beige head, lovely smoky nose. Full-bodied, malty with hints of caramel and just the right amount of smoke. A delicious example of the style.

Bottle, home. Bright copper-amber liquid, crystal clear, with a fizzy, white, dissipating head. The aroma is milder and more refined than other rauchbier that I’ve tried, mostly Schlenkerla. Spezial’s Lager tends more toward rich caramel and fruity malt. The smoke doesn’t make the beer feel old or hammy. It’s more like a fresh, mesquite-ish accent to a nice malty lager. The flavor is relatively sweet but also much bigger than its abv would suggest, a bit like a good mild. It’s a great malty lager flavor, nutty and yeasty. Soft feel. Very good lager.

Draft @ Redlight. Pours dark golden color with white head. Aroma is only slightly smoky. Malty flavor with just a touch of smokiness. Not really what I’m looking for in a smoked beer. Medium body with average carbonation.
